Anything by Mingus rocks. Blues and Roots is another good one.

Any bebop would be a good place to start. Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie (in the 40s and 50s). Coltrane's Giant Steps. Just about any Blue Note and Riverside 1950s releases. If you get the bug there's thousands of records out there to feed the addiction.

    There's not just bebop!
Check out Miles Davis early 70s stuff - Bitches Brew and Agharta for serious jazz/rock fusion.
And Herbie Hancock - Thrust and others around that period for properly funky jazz.
Then if you want something modern look into Bill Laswell stuff, like Hallucination Engine, or his Praxis project with Bootsy Collins...
Or for modern jazz-funk that's heavy on the funk and very light on the smooth, check out the Nils Landgren Funk Unit..
Or anything by Defunkt if you want vocals, and if you want off-the-wall try James chance (or White, same bloke) and the Contortions..
Or Arto Lindsay for strange guitar, Jonas Hellborg and Jamaaladeen Tacuma for serious bass-playing, or James Carter for ultimate sax heroics...
Then there's Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, James Blood Ulmer...
    Seek and ye shall find!
