    Hello,

Has anyone ever tried a pair of JBL Pro PA or Studio for hi-fi purposes?

For example, something like this JRX 115:

What could be the drawbacks (besides but ugly looks)?

    Thanks,
    Ricardo

Cannot answer your question but I must say I've been pleasantly surprised at how room-filling yet smooth these powered versions sound at a dance event I regularly attend. That said, the church acoustics would be helping. But really open and dynamic without being noticably harsh in the way large PA actives often are.

Personally, for passive JBLs, I'd try and track down something from the old 43XX range, although this is not necessarily easy.

You'd probably find the horns fairly tiring after a while. Most of this gear needs parametric eq'ing to get decent sound.

JBL did make some nice pro gear that is surprisingly hifi (don;t expect much in the way of "imaging" but who needs that for rock anyway?). If you were within driving distance of this eBay seller, you could of had a real bargain today.

The components in those boxes are particularly nice. You won;t get much below 80Hz out of them though :)

    Or what about these?

If you can push the budget out a bit, these would be fun.

These didn't reach the reserve but I have talked to the seller and he's open to offers. He has 4 pairs of them out of a radio studio install in the midlands. He'd have to send them to France or Germany to get top dollar for them (and risk the horns getting damaged).

In the UK, the going rate for these used is about £800 if you can find them (still a bargain though).

The problem with the ones you linked to at the top of the page is that they only extend to 12KHz. You would basically have no treble.

True, but you can't have everything!

Still a lot of fun for rock-n-roll as when you listen to that live, most PA system roll off at 12kHz (or 14kHz at best)

Very wide dispersion on those 4430s. Would need a lot of room as well as tinkering with the xovers. An amazing amount of speaker compared to what you could buy new for the money, though.

    Those look great!

Let's see if I can snatch something like that. I need efficient speakers for my op-amp integrated...

That pair on ebay have made a grand, and are still going. That's getting a bit pricey for them IMHO.

At £800 as suggested its a lot of speaker.

Hi Bottleneck, looks like I should have bought your AN-Es.
You're right, 1000 GBP is more than I wish to pay for those speakers.

    Hi,

A very good buy right now are the JBL L90's on audiomarkt. There are in fact 2 pairs.

    http://www.audiomarkt.de/

At 600 Euro, that's only about £400 plus shipping. This has great drive units, and being the type of monitor it is, will work in the near field.

If you have a big room, JBL 250ti have a really high reputation ... there are a pair of these on audiogon too, but the price is too high IMHO on this pair.

The L90's share some drive units with the 250ti's (I believe).

jbl 44 series (as above) do crop up, and these along with the two mentioned above are what you're likely to be looking at in your budget IME. Classic JBL monitors are now £3k+, so no longer the bargain they once were.

I'm biased, but yes the 250Ti are good and can still be had for near "bargain" prices, especiialy on German eBay (or France). I'd suggest picking them up as they are a pain to pack with the sloping cabinet walls.

Prices on the 43xx series monitors have gone through the roof the last few years.
