Opinion is always pretty polarised with this guy. A real love or loath him situation. I like him myself. I think he's a genuinely funny guy and someone you've got to watch without thinking you're going to hate him before even putting the DVD on. Give him a chance and I think most people will enjoy him. Admittedly he's done some bad ones but theres some gems in there too. Dumb And Dumber is a shining example of him at his best. Pure foolish indulgence!
If you want to see his more serious side the popular Truman Show and the not so well known The Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind are well worth watching. Especially the latter, excellent stuff with some great performances.
So am I alone in thinking he's a barrel o' laughs?!

I can't stand him in his typical Jim Carrey movies, but thought he was great in the atypical Eternal Sunshine. The wide-eyed innocence in Truman Show was a bit overdone.

I think he might be very good in a totally straight serious role, hopefully he'll try it one day.

His more 'serious' roles have been much better than the comedy roles - The Truman Show, The Majestic and, despite actually portraying a comedian, he was dramatically excellent as Andy Kaufman in Man On The Moon. I've not seen Eternal Sunshine... yet, but I will definitely do so. He has obviously got some real acting talent buried under all his face gag trickery, it's just a shame he doesn't follow that side and diversify his career much more.

Loved him in his more serious roles - he's amazing in Eternal Sunshine (which is a stunning film) and I also really liked him in Truman Show. Really can't stand Dumb & Dumber and other Farrely brothers stuff though :chunder:

Comedy wise, he's ok in small doses. Take his comedies individualy and they're ok, just that as a whole catalogue, it's pretty much the same thing over again (like coldplay, travis, etc..... ;) ).

Really enjoyed TS, but have never even heard of Eternal Sunshine

Cable Guy was good. He is ok in small doses. Seems a nice guy, was fun to watch his face when he spilled the crockery in the Savoy al over the floor.

You may laugh, after all it was panned by the critics...but check out the 'Medieval Times' scene. Very funny stuff! Infact theres some good giggles in there even if you have to fast forward some bits!

TBH my views on him are neither love or loath, he does some dross (Ace Venture etc) but also some pretty good films like The Truman Show and ESOSM.

I did find Me, myself and Irene funny, like when he held a little girls head under water then asked if she was going to play in the road again, when she says 'im going to tell my dad' he says wrong answer and stuffs her head back under - class.

That pretty much echoes my sentiments. I've seen relatively few, but one gets a bit tired of the same rubber face antics. Having said that, I did enjoy "The Mask" (although that was mainly because of the special effects) and "Liar, Liar", but "Bruce Almighty" was only saved by Morgan Freeman's nice performance. The "Ace Ventura" ones I turned off almost immediately, and the less said about the "Batman" one the better.

I think some of his films are in a way a regurgitation of the standard Carey "face" and character. A bit like John Cleese forever being Fawlty. Mostly unfunny. BUT and a huge BUT the movie Dumb and Dumber stands tall in my favourites. It is so well done, the gags actually are funny and it has an optomistic, innocent feel-good factor about it. I personally like stupidity and I often try to be stupid, like its a virtue. I don't always do it well but here they are masters. Also I think this is a movie that uses music well along the way. There are other Carey films good for other reasons, like The Truman Show, which was clever and Carey was engaging here without overly trying to be funny. Do I say I "like" Carey? No. I don't look forward to his next movie knowing I'll like it. But, knowing that he has been right for certain movies past makes me check out the trailers and the reviews before dismissing it. By the way, The Mask was absolute shit, except for the bit when the dog got the mask !

The scene where he's controlling the other news guy in the studio had me in stitches. The outtakes of that scene on the DVD were amusing too.

Agree that he can be really irritating at times but when Dumb and Dumber came out I can remember laughing so hard it hurt
