Yes I know what you mean there. I think I read a comment somewhere else saying that the length of the songs lets little melodies and stanzas creep up on you, whereas they wouldn't fit into a shorter more structured song. You'll suddenly hear a little bit of melody shine through. If you'll forgive the Zen, its a bit like looking at a pond and seeing a brightly coloured fish swim to the surface before darting back down:SLEEP:. Those are the little bits that get stuck in your head but they tend to be only a small part of a lengthy track.

Pitchfork has an interesting interview with her: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/39700-interview-joanna-newsom

Well, I've given TMEM a few listens now. I must say I haven't enjoyed it as much as Ys. Infact I think I would have thought twice about going for Ys if I'd listened to TMEM first. But maybe I've just been spoiled by Ys as theres some lovely tracks on TMEM, but for me its not as complete as Ys. The 2 tracks that are predominantly piano based don't really do it for me so I'm tempted to skip past them. Still a nice album though don't get me wrong.

Its nice to see such a development between the 2 albums so in a way I wish I'd got TMEM first. She's really evolved her sound and tried new things in Ys which must have been a treat for those of you following her work.

Yep, to be fair I've been listening to it in the car mainly. I liked your idea of listening to an album 5 times before deciding on it and trying to follow that idea myself nowadays. I'm intending to sit down and play it on the hifi and I think it will grow on me a bit more but I don't think I'll ever like those 2 piano tunes that much.

By the way...I love this album now!

Ys is still blowing me away though. I've been reading some of the notes on songmeanings.net to try and understand them a bit better:shame:Amazing songwriting.
