to go between my cd player and preamp.

preamp to power amp is single ended RCAs as there are no xlrs on the power amp.

trouble is, when i switch over to the XLR inputs, it sounds all out-of-phase through the speakers

    is this a faulty cable?
Everythings selected as it should be although not sure if theres a setting for the cd player to select XLR instead of RCA as there were no instructions.

    Hope someone can help

incidentally they are both claimed to be fully balanced xlr inputs/outputs according to the manufacturers

Don't US balanced connections invert phase? I thought I read that somewhere. Is your amp American?

If you can, slip the covers back on the plugs and take a look at the wiring.

    Standard wiring connections are:

PIN 1 = GND or outer shield

    PIN 2 = + HOT (Usually a red wire)

PIN 3 = - NEG or RETURN (Usually a white or black wire)

The colours may vary from the standard red and white, they may be grey or blue, but doesn't really matter provided they are wired pin for pin and not crossed over.

Never make the assumption either that all balanced cables are wired in the standard form as a web search recently taught me, but this is for more exotic electronics for a specific task and not audio/hi-fi seperates.

    oh arse.

i was slipping the connectors back to take a peek and the soldering went on one of the plugs

i am utterly shite at soldering. don't suppose i could tempt anyone to resolder it back could i if i pay postage?

that is, when i get replies from SAT and Plinius as to how their xlr sockets are wired.
