Ignorant hi fi and music lover needs help!

Before my dumb questioning commences may I say I think this looks bloody brilliant - and I want it!

Please excuse my thickness (bit new at this 'special shelf' stuff) but is this a bunch of coffee tables that you've progressively sawn the legs off?

   And is that a granit chopping board as well? 

   Is a glass chopping board any good? They're ultimately cheaper and I'm somewhat broke - however, fifteen squid for a nice looking piece of granite over a 'magic block of wood' from Russ 'no stranger to outrageous profit' Andrews costing 1 grand per square inch is a mighty attractive proposition!

Those spikes look great, are they expensive and where from?

Do squash balls cut in half cut the mustard?

PS: I'm shit at DIY so would not attempt to construct anything myself. Even been getting jittery about the prospect of trying to cut squash balls into perfect halves!
