I wondered if someone could recommend some latin albums for me. I have one by Mongo Santamaria but nothing by people like Ray Barretto, Tito Puente etc.

Is anyone out there a Latin expert?

    Virginia Rodrigues also definitely
    Maria Rita maybe
Estrella Morente (Spanish, maybe that counts?)
Buena Vista Social Club if by some chance you're not aware of it
    Ibrahim Ferrer (of BVSC fame)
Ruben Gonzalez (also of BVSC fame)

    some purchases!

I had a look at Allmusic.com and bought "Acid" by Ray Baretto and "The world's greatest latin band" by Machito on the strength of their recommendations; all vinyl of course!

Thank you for your advice I will check out some of the artists you have recommended and I may recommend the purchases I have made back to you!

    Great Latin albums

"Acid" by Ray Barretto and "The World's Greatest Latin Band" by Machito are both excellent. Simply great music and stellar musicianship. Recommended for anyone looking for a route into true Latin music.

I love Lila Downs - a bit americanised but still great. Cuts your soul like a knife on some songs. And many of her songs are in English. Fantastic production.

The other great album, that I love is "Latin Playboys" by, well, Latin Playboys. :) Tacky name, and the music is not entirely Latin, more tex mex with Latin flair, but it is quality stuff, the artists are Hidalgo and his Los Lobos mates in disguise. I actually prefer this album to other Los Lobos staff.

Israel López "Cachao" Master Sessions I and II, No te va a Gustar, Yamandú Costa, anything by Agustín Lara if you understand the language, Candombe grupo Cuareim (Discs du Monde) and Septeto Habanero 90 años. Some mayn't be available in Europe.
