Having discovered that my B&W CDM1Se speakers excite the primary resonance in my room, I'm casting around for some small speakers to try. I don't want to buy new, and I don't want to spend a ton of money either, this is an experiment.

I remember a demo I had in the 80s of an LP12 plus some exposure amps driving some Mordant Short MS10s, and I was stunned by the 'realness' of the presentation. I'm looking for speakers of the MS10 'gabarit', so maximum used price is £100, what can I look for from the 70s, 80s or 90s?

    Thanks

The KEF Coda 8 sounds great on the end of serious amplification and should be easy to find.

There's a pair of MS10s on epay.co.uk at £10 at the moment, tempted at that price, there's also some MS20 pearls, any idea of the dimensions of the ms20s ?

Have you experimented with the positioning of your speakers and with the spiking/coupling to the floor?

Postioning, there's not much leeway. I tried CARA again this weekend to see where it would put the speakrs in my room. I'd be listening nearfield with the speakers about 3ft from any bounday, can't be done. I have some RMS powerpoints, a composite stainless steel/ carbon fibre spike, going into inverted Cleatlight Audio RDC buttons for coupling to floor which is sealed Oka parquet.

Well that's a vintage idea, but I suspect they'll be too big, dimensions I'm looking for are 30cm*20cm*20cm or such.

i use a pair of Leak Mini Sandwichs in the kitchen, and they're about 35cm tall so not too big. They are extremely bright with modern amplification though.

tell u what you should look out for- Mordaunt Short MS10i CLASSICs. £280s worth in their day and really are extraordinary little speakers. Outstanding.
my ms30 classics are 40cm tall and very deep by the way, so expect the ms20s to be around 35cm tall. again, the pearl versions are the ones to look out for, but they didn't issue the ms20s in the 'classic' guise

    MS10i's

Agree with Rory, look out for the Classics, you should get them in budget. I had two pairs of MS10i's which I sold last year, one set were Perals, both sets sold for around £45-£60 from memory. Great speakers and even better on Linn KanII stands (a further £50 s/h well spent). Positioned right, these speakers really rock, some amazing bass can be achieved too. Took some Shahinian Arcs to make me dig into my pocket to replace them.

Thanks for the hints, I think I'll look out for Mordaunt Short MS10i Pearls or Classics, they're the size I'm looking for and don't seem to be very poular so I should be able to get some at a good price. I think i'll pass on the MS10s that are available today on EBay, unless of course they are 10i and are not noted as such.

the ones ending in 3 hours have dented tweeter domes. don't bother. it'll cost you AT LEAST £50 for two new tweeters, postage is a tenner, plus they're at £10 at the moment anyway. Thats £70.

I think I saw some Castle Richmonds (or whatever they were) for around £130 if you don't mind pushing the budget that little bit extra. It was either Moorgate or Lintone who had them on offer.

    Rory,

I had decided to pass on the current Ms 10s. I'd seen the Richmonds, they would be lovely a bargain for someone. I want to make sure I'm not just acting on a whim, and there are some M1s on Ebay.

I heard someone say in my JR-149 posts that you can get these now for under 150 quid. If thats the case (I think WM has some pairs) I cant see anything in the world being better - they are LS3/5A variants after all.

Im using a pair right now, and I think they're up there with any standmount Ive ever heard.

I don't think any amount of positioning will help the CDMs.I had them, and eventually found them just too tiring on long sessions, the bass was just boomy (relatively) and they frustrated me.Dynaudio 52s for me................
