Oh well looks like i never managed to trade my old bird in for a newer model after all. Just got back from taking 'er indoors out for a nice meal and a few sherberts on her 40th birthday, i've got to admit, and i told her at the time , she didn't look a day older than 40 ( ;) ). My turn next early year.

we've been married for just over 18 years now, you get less for murder, i told her in jest ! ( ;) ).

Looks like we're stuck with each othe now, still, it could be worse.................

Some say life begins in the nursing home, some say life ends when you leave university, some say life begins in the coffin.

I've only got another 18 years for my life is supposed to begin.

40 is probably a nice age, you will most likely to be settled and be fairly well of finanicialy if not rich, you will know where you're going in life etc but you're still young enough to enjoy the rest of it.

Being 22 is a nice age but for me there is so much uncertancy I would like to be older and more settled.

AT - when you are older and more settled, you'll wish you were younger, footloose and fancy free! Life begins (and ends) whenever you choose.

Yep you're never settled with what you have got, I am sure being young is distorted though and people remember it being better than it actually was. I am sure when I am old I look at back at my university days as being better than they actually were.

I suppose that uncertaincy can be a bit of excitement as well.

In life as in hi-fi! We've just got to remind ourselves to stop and enjoy where ever we are from time to time.

    Regards,

Stuart (who's been a grumpy sod all day and now trying to relax a bit

Yep this what I want to try and do, but life has a way of making sure that dosn't happen (bills etc) I do want to try and move as soon as I get a job though.

This why I haven't bothered to look for a job just yet, when I leave in a few weeks time I want to just mess about for a few weeks as it might be last chance until I retire.

I might try and get down to Cornwall or Devon for a few days this summer, it seems a bit daft going mainland Europe when there is lovely parts of the UK I have not seen yet.

I have done a lot in the last few years, even just traveling to places for a few days I have seen so many cities it is an education and an experience in its own right.

Life is too short I am sure everybody has ideas that never come to anything though. I just don't want to get to 40 or 50 and suddently realise I haven;t done any of it ands its too late.

    Take a gap year.

Fly out to somewhere like India and spend a few months roaming around. You can live out there for pennies. You could do with seeing how the other half live.

It will give you a sense of adventure and achievement and will be looked upon favourably by prospective employers when you return.

    Regards

Or get me run over! It was hard enough crossing the roads in Paris :p

I've seen some jobs I am going to apply for anyway, although I said there was no rush I also need to move out, as I don't want to be living at home when I am 40.

Maybe I could move next door to Mick :p

Too late at fifty! You jest.
I'm over 50, currently spend a third of the year in France and intend moving to the South of france within the next 2 years. I've never been more able to consider travel in my life. And that's without paying 40% tax like Mick!

You're lucky then, a lot of people get tied down with jobs and stuff although so suppose a lot of people have paid of their mortages at 50. My dad is 53 now, he only seems to work 3 days a week now and gets up pretty much when he wants.

He's happier now then he used to be. I have a great aunty she is 82, she is still traveling all over the world but she is stinking rich.

AT - You really ought to consider Mick's advice of a gap year. Wish I had done this. It will allow you the chance to experience some things that you might not otherwise encounter, and give you a broader perspective on life before you get into the career thing.

    Regards,

    Stuart.

PS - how has this turned into a 'give AT life coaching' thread? S&C, hope you and your good lady wife enjoyed her birthday!!

I second that emotion. My own gap year was spent working for Liverpool City Council, which was eye-opning in different ways.

I can only 'really' go over the christmas hols as thats when my biggest clients colse down I tend to go to India as its hot.

Roger has the right idea about advancing old age.

Let me die a youngman's death
    Roger McGough

Let me die a youngman's death not a clean & inbetween the sheets
holywater death not a famous-last-words peaceful out of breath death

When I'm 73 & in constant good tumour may I be mown down at dawn by a
bright red sports car on my way home from an allnight party

Or when I'm 91 with silver hair & sitting in a barber's chair may rival
gangsters with hamfisted tommyguns burst in & give me a short back &
    insides

Or when I'm 104 & banned from the Cavern may my mistress catching me in
bed with her daughter & fearing her son cut me up into little pieces &
throw away every piece but one

Let me die a youngman's death not a free from sin tiptoe in candle wax &
waning death not a curtains drawn by angels borne 'what a nice way to
    go' death

A gap year in Liverpool may be too close to home, going to school in Moss Side was enough to see how the poorer people live.

I was about the only person in the school who wasn't a teacher who wasn't on dinner tickets.

Liverpool was a step up the social ladder from Birkenhead. My gap year was taken for two reasons: firstly because I didn't get a single offer from any of my chosen universities; secondly to get some money together for when I eventually went to university the following October.
