Anyone got any recommendations for a good blokes mag, should include things like fashion, accessories (footware, watches etc). Latest gadgets like mobiles, PDAs etc and some lifestyle articles.

Not really interested in soft porn mags like FHM/Maxim, if I want porn I'll go on t'internet :JPS: So something a bit more up market really, any good ones about?

hmmm....I don't really buy them anymore - but have you tried something like esquire or GQ - tho, they do tend to have a lot of fashion stuff in them...
but then there are mags like T3 - which is fine, tho I haven't read that for a few years...but then there are also mags like Stuff, but the reviewers don't to seem to have a clue what they're talking about...

you're probably best popping to your local WH smiths and having a read and see which ones you prefer...

generally i loath blokes mags. though mrsjohnh is a bit of a sucker for house and garden etc. as a result our little garden is festoned with painted watering cans and the like.

for magazines I reccomend jazzwise and prospect

Mens Health is IMHO about the best, covers Sex, Fitness, Sex, Fashion and Sex. What else does a bloke need to know about ?

BTW Its not a gay magazine, it is just a fairly good !

Any man's magazine that covers fashion is by definition gay.

What a man needs to know about:

    Beer
    Football
    Sex
    Sheds

And let me guess, tools, cars (usually with long bonnets) and ultra hot curries?

Generally all the things insecure heterosexuals need to prove their man hood ;)

Some good ideas so far dudes, off to Smiths for a browse!!

True but I'm sure the covers, which always feature a pumped and bare chested type, don't help sell it to straight men however.. I'd be more embarrassed buying that in Smiths than a copy of Amateur Gynaecologist ...

It also talks utter crap when it comes to fitness. As an ex-b'builder I can tell you that doubling your biceps or getting a 6 pack in 6 weeks is just not possible. What really gets me about mens health is that alot of their models are users, when youve trained with and around users for a number of years you can tell easily. I firmly blame the likes of this mag for the alraming rise of steriod abuse in kids who aspire to having these bodies.

    Amen.

Given your expereince, what do you reckon to that American boy (there was a 'World's Strongest Boy' documentary about him recently) who looked like an anatomy drawing and was apparently benchpressing 100kg at the age of 8? freak of nature or drugged up by his dad?

yeah, thats was scary - while I don't have any experience - I was probably say it's a combination of good genes, a very strict regime and possibly legal / illegal supplements...after his dad left he was like a normal kid!

I know who you mean, he was in alot of mags about 4 yrs ago espec the imported american ones.

I think alot of the claims needed to be taken with a pinch of salt. He might have has a 1 or 2 rep max at 100kg but bench actually reppin 100k is pretty dam good, but maybe he did I just find it hard to believe.

The main problem with him is that he contradicted all science. In order to grow muscle you need an anabolic environment, key to this are the amino acids (protein) and testosterone, theres alot of other stuff but they are the biggies. As we know, test kicks in when we begin 'the jouney to manhood' and peaks at around 19-21. A child of eight will have very little test and thus limited growth above whats natural, also I would expect his joints or even bones to suffer heavy damage with the weight he was lifting.

Now the basics of bbuilding or strength training are eat lots, train lots and sleep lots, if all this is strictly observed then slowly things will shape up, however its only to a point, this is were drugs come in. Ive no doubt that his dad was supplementing his diet and coming form Eastern Europe this could be any old crap, they experimented with some very hard drugs many of which went straight for human consumption (many steriods are intended for vetinary use).

Its still quite remarkable, usually you get 1 decent cycle (8 weeks) out of a drug, after that its potency drops with every use, this is when 'stacking' comes in, a case of combining more and more drugs so they remain effective. A stack of 5 or 6 plus the drugs needed to combat side-effects is quite common. Eventually even this loses its effects and that when the needle comes in, a very potent dose injected every 3rd day or so. After this its growth hormone, now that is big stuff. Sorry for digressing but what Im getting at is that this lad must have needed ALOT of extra test to get things growing as much as he did but I would have expected much more side-effects than he was showing. Im sure someone would have seen his site-marks if his dad was injecting. Either way its quite remarkable.

Ive got to say I think the lad will suffer big time when he gets older, the general rule is to start using heavy weights at around 17/18, i fear his joints and tendons will have suffered too much.

Blimey ! Talk about being slated !

I still hold my hand up as a reader !

I agree with you regarding the body building stuff, putting your body into stress is not healthy, but the mag does cover a lot of things young guys are afraid to ask or do not know who to ask.

I still stand by it and say it is a good mag, even though it does have a semi clad bloke on the cover !

No offence was intended, some parts of the mag are good and like you said covers areas that need covering, it was my personal gripe with their build this, build that in a matter of weeks. Theres been quite alot of bad advice in there. Saying all that I do buy when there are certain 'special' editions regarding dual activities :JPS:

If you can rep your own bodyweight then you can class yourself as being strong, its one of the main goals.
