aren't actually that bad you know.
i'm now living with a pair of old mission 700 standmounts and although they are a bit 'shut in' at the top, have bugger all bass and detail is suffering they are actually quite a lot of fun.
See the my kit link for a piccy
    cheers

try it again (or do a refresh) i posted the above and then edited the my kit thing.
pretty bad i guess.. but they seem to have all those cliche's (musicality, timing, pr&t, etc.) which make them enjoyable but without any of the other cliches (seismic bass, holographic imaging, superb detail, etc.) which are also looked for.
    cheers

ahh the old shape Mission 700s! They were nice speakers, not the versions of 6 yrs ago which went under the same name and sounded horrid!!

i put my (budget-ish) Monitor Audio R252s on my high end system a little while ago and yes it was quite good fun too. Source first scenario possibly but shove some better speakers on and you'd be surprised i think :)

Similar to my experience when going to the jim rogers standmounts I raved about.

They are like the simple pleasures of the good glass of wine I am currently enjoying..

Good basic products questions the rationale of the megabuck audiophilia we all love so much, and puts up 2 fingers at the silly arguements we get into.

Only real let down with the '149s has been when I asked them to play Japanese drumming... ooh dear. Well... maybe not oh dear, just not oh my gawdd!!

    nb
bloody kids with fireworks have started already.
anybody else doing this to the background of wizz bang and pop? (thats fireworks not drugs)
    :D

Nice choice of music there, Chris :) Ondekoza or KODO?
The Japanese drumming CDs tend to be very dynamic in the sense that the variation between high and low volumes is great and often very, very sudden. The combination of low powered valve amp and the 149s is not going to make that particular scenario IMHO. Try a much higher powered amp with the 149s or wait until you get the BIG speaks for your amp.

Does anyone know anything about the Mission 760iSE's?

I have a set coming sometime in the next week or two to compare to my Kef Coda 7's. I have a feeling the Kef's will be better but wanted anyone's opinion.

I will be selling the loser as well (probably the Mission IMO)

    Hi Joel

Thanks for the reccomendations on the drumming and in general. I bought a 'best of' Kodo as a place to start - and because I saw it for a fiver!! :D

Im really liking percussion per se at the moment, and more japanese and percussion music from all over the world is what I want to explore more at the moment. Ive recently become so bored with a lot of popular music, I want something more.

I will buy an Ondekoza album at some point, and the 'aahndo' (forgive the spelling) album you reccomended. The link you posted for the second is Amazon France, and Im having difficulty trying to translate the price to pounds and navagate it in French! - I wish Amazon stocked all of its products in every website, I cant see that it would cause such tremendous problems?

The Border Patrol drives the '149s ok - well up to certain volumes anyway.. you dont notice it with most music, but Im sure you're right a more powerfull amp would enable me to wick up the volume.

    gary,
that's not wallpaper, they are my curtains. this means they can be drawn back out of sight.
i must say that the comments that i've recieved about my interior decor makes me wonder whether the uk's t.v. broadcasters are involved in a huge social engineering experiment, funded by ikea. as i try to avoid any t.v. that tries to make me afraid or disatisfied with my lot (i.e. the news, location ^ 3, buy a barn in provence, etc.) i don't seem to be affected by this need to have my walls and balls colour matched. if it keeps me warm and dry then the house is doing it's job. if it needs fixing i'll fix it but at the end of the day spending money on 'stylish' curtains makes about as much sense to me as my hi-fi spending would to a 'normal' person. And i like it that way.
    cheers

Joel, sounds like you know your Japanese drums - any chance of a recommended recording or two? I have one such CD, and it was a big disappointment.

Saw a group called Matsuriza at Disney Epcot Centre of all places (in the Japan section of course), where they did an outside performance of some of their Taiko drumming, and that was excellent. Bought one of their [rather cheap and tacky] CDs from the Disney shop but it's crap - lots of cheesy synth music playing along with the drums, which are surprisingly quiet in the mix, and not nearly as dynamic and impressive as they should be.

So, I've heard there is much better to be had. Any tips/suggestions/etc?

Cheers, and sorry for the hijack...

    Dunc
