    Howdy

I'm not certain but from the photos it looks like that's a pretty early LP12, pre-Valhalla power supply upgrade judging by the on/off switch, and likely to be without the Nirvana upgrade too.

That's not saying that it's not worth buying, by any means, as the LP12 was always a great deck, but I've seen later upgraded models go for similar money and, IMHO, it's worth getting the LP12 with at least the Valhalla power supply as this offers considerable improvements to the sound.

I noticed an LP12 in the freeads pages of www.hififorsale.com the other day, with a black Ittock tonearm, Valhalla power supply and Cirkus bearing upgrade for about £500.00 and, whilst this a fair bit more than the current price of the one on ebay, it would represent a better sound for pound upgrade IMHO on your current RB300 equipped Planar 3. (And you wouldn't have the hassle of trying to fit the Rega arm to the LP12.)

    Hope that helps,

    Goomer.

Rob, it would be a significant upgrade to a planner 3.

More over you can adjust the main points your self, suspension etc. OK it'll take some fiddling but once done job done.

A service would be ideal, but what I am saying is you can wait for that.

Plus of course you will get a few quid for the planner 3 on ebay as well.

The LP12 can be upgraded in all sorts of ways, but in that configuration will sound great.

If it were me bidding I would go to 400, no more.

It might be worth asking this question on the Pink Fish Media forum where they know about these things.

The LP12 makes a great s/h buy, and any nasty dangly bits can be replaced with new parts. It scores very well in reviews (and in real life) for its fine "pace rhythm & timing" in particular.

Some more recent reviewers have suggested that it suffers from speed instability, which is a little odd given the LP12's reputation for good 'PRAT', but there you go!

FWIW & IMHO the LP12 is a great second hand bargain but if you're going to buy new consider a P9 at a third the price for the same level of performance.

We don't mind you being here as long as you behave yourself.

I personally think the LP12 is over rated in the sense that if some one wants a "decent" TT, they automatically go for one.

Most LP12 owners do not have a clue how to set them up and the number of competetant dealers who have such ability is diminshing by the day. I suspect most LP12's are only playing at less than their full potential.

A certain chap on another forum has cirkused / decirkused and re cirkused again and one day claims that the thing sings like a lark and then later he wants to bin it because it sounds poor. The thing is too tempermental for most guys, who if they were honest with themselves, lack the ability to properly maintain the thing.

The Rega P9 is literally a plug in and play jobbie and it sounds pretty good.

To me the LP12 is grossly over rated.

    Regards

    Mick

    Re: You confuse me Sir

Mick, not 'That kinda of private club', more of their own room just for TT stuff, that won't get cross contaminated with lowly digital posts ;) sort of like the chat room, but for all things TT.
But Mick, can you see the entry question to a 'private Club' arh sir, are you on the Vinyl square brother Tone-arm :D

It seems fashionable to 'knock' the LP12, which is fair enough I guess. Where there is an icon, there will be iconoclasts.

But before you get too excited about how rubbish the LP12 allegedly is, please consider that the crappy old LP12 saw off the Linn CD12 CD player at a public demo.

<Cue loads of people telling me how dreadful the CD12 is: how it doesn't count, or isn't fair, etc etc>

Well Tony, this is the 'hi-fi' room, so maybe the CD users could move to their own 'mid-fi' room.

    That's fair. :)

That's OK Tom... I've never heard a P9, but have been advised that it sounds a bit 'CD-like', - whatever that means.

    You were not the 'knocker'.
