    Hi All,

    As a newcomer to this forum (or any other forum for that matter), I was baffled at first by the use of abbreviations / acronyms I was not familiar with.

    Provided this has not been done in the past, I thought it could be helpful to have a list of said abbreviations available to members.

    Below are the ones I've come across so far, with the meaning I assumed they have here.

    Please feel free to contribute.

    FWIW = For what it's worth
    AFAIK = As far as I know
    OMG = Oh my God
    IMO = In my opinion
    IMHO = In my humble opinion
    SWMBO = She who must be obeyed
    PITA = self-explanatory :)
    BTW = By the way

    That's all for now

    You've got the meanings right :) . However, they are not unique to this forum. They are fairly commonly used throughout the internet in newsgroups and forums. I'm sure there must be a website with most of them documented somewhere.

    A couple not on your list which are more particular to this forum (and other hifi forums) are:

    WAF = Wife Acceptance Factor
    PRaT = Pace Rhythm and Timing

    The first is self explanatory. The second has had entire threads devoted to it :rolleyes: .

    Michael.

    Thanks Michael,

    For some reason, WAF is the only one I was familiar with before joining Z/G :)

    It's also perhaps the only English word pronounced properly in Parisian demo rooms (probably 'cos it's pronounced the same way)

    I keep running into IIRC :confused:

    IIRC = If I Remember Correctly

    If there is an abbreviation that baffles you, type "(troublesome abbreviation) means" into Google, you'll get a translation in almost all cases.

    For an example see here

    In my time (IIRC, that's when I paid my way through college serving pints in an English pub) B&T used to stand for "Bitter and Tan". Or was it "Black and Tan" ?

    Who can you trust :confused:

    It's a popular way of saying "Cheers" when having a drink in Belfast. It stands for Up Yer Bum With A Sharp Stick.

    Could come in useful.

    Is this the best place for this thread? or the other one about technical meanings.

    Edit: actually thinking about it why not just put this link somewhere easy to find?

    Michael,

    Every time my browser get's to one of your posts, it hangs for bloody ages. Your little firefox thingy isn't displaying, could the link be fubar?

    Or maybe it's just IE getting defensive?

    Seems like www.spreadfirefox.com has gone temporarily AWOL, rather like it did shortly after the 1.0 release. I'll take the link out of my sig for now.
