My mates going to the Brighton date!

If I'd known about this earlier I'd have tried to get to the London one tonight! Would have been a nice birthday treat! Could have given the whole crowd chicken pox too!

I've noticed aphex mentioned on a couple of sites too. Can't really work out what the format is going to be for these gigs. Will they be doing stuff togeather? Sounds like Squarepusher will be doing some stuff, then the Sinfonietta will be interpreting some of his stuff too.

Will be interested to hear how it goes!

There was a prog on Radio 4 about this - a very interesting interview with Squarepusher and a brief listen to his music as well as the Sinfonietta interpretations. Pity there's only a few concerts happening, none near me. Anybody else going/been? I can't as I'm not anywhere near the venues.

Anybody else got Squarepusher's new album, 'Ultravistor'? I've listened to it a few times and I'm quickly being convinced it's his best yet. He seems to be progressing towards a good balancing act between his drill'n'bass style and his jazzy bass guitar efforts. The album reminds me a lot of 'drukqs' as well, a good mixture of styles which blends together to make a very intriguing, moving listening experience.

    Yup..
Some serious low bass sho makes the house shake!
I tend to play it for folks who come and visit then dare to tell me they like dance music, like Britney..

I've got seats down the front for the Brighton date, and there are still seats available if anyone else is interested.

01273 709709 is the number for the box office.

Recieved this aMOngst my birthday pressies :)

Only the one (drunken) listen so far so can't really comment. Sounds like Mr Pusher has done it again though!

I think the Brighton date will be too far for me, and i'll probably be having to work to make up for the two weeks i've just had off ill. :(
Let us know how it goes though.

Anyone know what the exact format is for these dates?

I have (a "limited Edition" 2CD). I heard some by chance while looking for Ethiopian cattle herder "music" (actually very good) in Tower and got both.
He is the most interesting artist I've heard out of the UK for quite a while (I hope sideshow shows me the error of my ways when I'm over).
I was really surprised by the occasional Jazz-Rock interludes. I thought these were some kind of ironic post-rock comment or something - especially with the "live" clapping and hollering.
A lot of thought, care and talent has gone into this, and it is a very interesting album with moments of rare beauty. I hope he explores further the polyrhythmic side of things in future releases and filters out some of the filler.
The blurpy synths are fab :D

I bought this last week. Only given it one (background) listen, but it seemed promising. The jazz influences were a bit undigested on Music Is Rotted One Note, this sounds better integrated.

Joel, when are you over? Don't say April 19th-26th, cos I'm in the USA that week...

:( UK is from the 16th - 20th approx. But I am very busy on the 16th and 17th. Looks like it's going to have to be the 18th. That might be tricky, too. But we'll have to arrange something.

Not going to Fez either this year, have to go to Bruges on a work trip. Arse.

Joel, what's on the 2nd disc?

I wasn't aware until reading some stuff when trying to find out about these dates that he played the bass himself! Not a bad player at all!

Anyone heard any of his brothers stuff? Goes under the name Ceefax.

I went to the London Sinfonietta , Squarepusher, Jamie Lidell thing last night in Liverpool - we had superb seats front row dead centre of the balcony. Great gig, Reich's 'Six marimbas', 'Violin Phase' and Varese's 'Ionisation' really hitting the spot for me. At the end The London Sinfonietta pulled off a excellent version of the first track on the Polygon Window 'Surfing on sine waves' LP (Aphex Twin). The whole evening really worked, a great night out.

    Glad you enjoyed it!

The Liverpool Philharmonic has a very large stage area and between them Warp and The London Sinfonietta had utilised it all. There was a grand piano at either side, two large tables of electronics for Squarepusher and Lidell at the front, a load of percussion for the London Sinfonietta at the back and plenty of space to loose six huge marimbas in the middle. There was also a huge projection screen that was superbly utilised throughout – Warp are renowned for excellent videos and they certainly didn't disappoint.

The night started off with a pianist playing a prepared piano piece from the last Aphex LP, then the full Sinfonietta came on and took everyones head off with Varese's stunning 'Ionisation'. Squarepusher was next up and produced a superb bleep, glitch and 303 type thing, then got all self indulgent on a bass and lost the plot a bit. Next up was George Antheil's amazing Ballet Mécanique (I'd never heard this before), then the interval. The interval enabled the showing of a good number of Warp videos, so I stayed put and watched them.

After the interval some chick from the Sinfonietta played Steve Reich's Violin Phase, which has to be one of the hardest pieces of music to play ever written – it is a 'rif' of 8 notes played against a tape backing. The tape starts, the violinist starts in sync with the tape but plays infinitesimally faster so you get all the beat harmonics as the notes gradually shift against one another. There are additional parts on the tape building it up to four or so in total by the end. They had the projection screen hooked up showing her playing the tape parts, all overlaid so you could see the time shifts between them. It was absolutely awesome, and I simply cannot comprehend how someone can play an instrument with that degree of precision.

Next some Cage and the James Lidell which was good fun. Then Reich's epic 'six marimbas' and the gig ended with the Polygon Window piece which was amazing. It all went down very well ending in a long standing ovation. A truly exceptional gig.

    Tony.
