I got to say, it sounds very much like the problems I have experienced with music from that period and before. Dire Straits, Supertramp to name but two.

The radical solution for this period is to get a new copy on 180g vinyl, trust me it'll sound right again, just as you remember it.

I so much wish it wasn't the case, because it's even more boxes. But I could never get certain albums to sound right, even on top dCS, Sim, Wadia etc.

 I am not short of dynamics. Perhaps you need some proper speakers :p

So what sort of esoterica are you using anyway?

zerogain.... the only place I know where I can talk about liking to listen to ''breakfast in america'' that I bought for 50p on vinyl from a charity shop without people thinking that its sad! ( I hope thats the case anyway)...!!

NB the remake of ''the logical song'' is possibly the worst remake Ive ever heard of any track ever!!!!!!!! dear oh dear.... it sounded like pinky and perky, but I forget who released it..

Just looked at your sig. There doesn't seem to be anything obviously wrong with your line-up so you must be listening for something different to me. Love Over Gold never fails to please here.
Perhaps you should get a REL for your system, never mind the car (you'd need an MPV or somesuch to fit it in anyway, it would be too tall for the average boot).

I have many early CD's that i just dont play anymore, due to them sounding so bad.
Some stuff i have on vinyl not sounding so good and its even worse on CD. Like yourself ive noticed it is mostly early CD's, or a CD copy of an album that was originaly released before the birth of the shiny disc

It's all a question of synergy I'm afraid. My system was hand picked to sound good with these very CDs of which you complain.

Love Over Gold just finished playing and it was excellent.
The best renditions of the Supertramp classics are on the live album "Paris". Superb! You wanna hear dynamics?

Perhaps you should ditch the Krell and get an ATC instead

BTW, if you want all the upside of metal cone drivers without the down side, carbon fibre is where it's at (more thwack than Kevlar too).

Old CDs sound pretty damn good on my system (once green penned of course) :)

Thats probably because the tube amp and the 1SCs ever so slightly smooth off the nasties on duff CD masters
