I got two new tyres today and perfect timing it seems.

My friend was driving in icy conditions this morning her tyres are down to 1.9mm last time I checked (legal but not safe in my opinion). Some car pulled, she had to brake her car skidded onto the pavement. Now she might have been going too fast, I have no idea I wasn't there, but I am sure the tyres didn't help.

Somebody I don't know but on a forum crashed his £12k car this morning, he lost control in the snow hitting an oncoming car, he wasn't injured and the damage is light but still bad.

I was driving around 25mph in a twisty bit of road with a 30 limit with speed cameras, some guy was right on my tail, he then overtook me at about 45 then pulled staight in front of me as the speed camera appeared then slamed on his brakes, this also caused me to brake but I was already going slow. I was just amazed that somebody could be so stupid in icy conditions? Even though I did nothing wrong I learnt from it as experience.

Luckily most motorists today seemed a lot more alert, were drivign slower and were being safe :).

I made the mistake of even trying to go to work this morning. 4-6inches of snow on an ungritted road.

An hour and a half later, I managed to get home.

Low-profile, wide tyres are not ideal for snow, even if they have got 6mm of tread on them...

Yea. In these conditions its essential to check your brake pipes, turn the radio off, wear a cap and mutter to yourself about what might happen.

I can't help but think that the tread in tyres is there to clear water. Doesn't work too effectively with snow. The answers are:
    1. Snow tyres
    2. Being VERY circumspect and careful
    3. Avoid driving

Picking up my 944 from a farm track in the hills tomorrow, that'll be fun.

I don't think I'll need any bran either.

AT - well done for getting some new tyres, but take it even easier as a result.

Brand new tyres and verycold&wet or icy conditions can be a lethal combination, since it can take 100miles of use to develop full grip owing to the need to wear-off mould release gunge and similar effects.

(I agree with the sentiments about pricks with foresight shorter than their braking distances, though)

Thanks for the tip :) I won't be driving till Friday anyway I have no need. Hopefully by then the roads will have more grip. I saw two accidents today. One where somebody appears to have been run over at a junction and another where two cars have hit posts on the pavements both cars looked like write offs.

Icy roads are great, I executed a seriously good hand-brake turn in my combo van today!

Where's the feckin snow in Somerset/Dorset, that's what I want to know!?!?!?!?! I love it, it's a hoot, and spinning around in empty car parks is good fun and hey, kids, it can help you to learn what you can expect your car to do when you lose grip, so that's a good line to spout when the rozzers come and spoil your fun. :D.

It is not a laughing matter, I was nearly killed when a soon to be ex mate dried to demonstrate that ABS is useless in the ice, car ended up traveling sideways at about 30mph. Very scary moment and not in a controled envrioment. Skid pans are very different as it is controled and safe. I could love to drive on ice, if I had the space of Antertica.

Unless you come from an area or an era where winter snow was the norm, you're better avoiding it.

Watching the average motorist in the Midlands trying to cope with it is both comical and depressing.

I like using the doddery cars to bounce off on roundabouts, sliding towards pedestrians on zebras with all wheels locked.
    Sideways moments, love em.
