If someone is speaking (not rapping) in a song then I'm more likely to be able to "automatically comprehend" it, but otherwise the voice is just instinctly "heard" by my brain as an instrument. I guess I'm rare though, as most people IME hate instrumental music, find it boring and "need" words to keep them interested - a piece of music isn't complete for them without words - maybe because they can't place a context or meaning without words to guide them. I'm just not a words oriented person, simple as that I guess, which somehow filters through transparently into my music listening habits.

Mind you, understanding the words of song isn't always the be all and end all for liking a piece of music. Two example I can think of which we both like would be Desireless "Voyage voyage" and that one by Offra Haza (or however you spell her name).

I suppose it pays to know what people are singing about sometimes, after all, the consequences of not knowing the question that Lady Marmalade pose in their classic 70's disco tune could be quite amsuing if you end up singing the chorurs to someone who didn't intend to in a club! :D

What style of music is Arab Strap, MO?

I used to go out with the drummer's sister (a loooooooooooong time ago).

Hardly the MOst up-lifting music in the world.

Now where did I put that screwdriver :MILD: ?

Hmm - I'm definitely like that with a lot of classical, though I like ambient and of course electronic music which doesn't always have words in it. Acoustic stuff like that "Endgame" off of REM's "Out of time" is a good example...

I'd say people have more trouble with tracks that lack a beat/drum track than lack words.

Rap should be spealt with a VERY audible "C" in most cases. And hip hop should have "S" at the start of both words with the "P" changed to "T" in most cases. There are exceptions to the rule of course, but in the main... :) IMHO of course.

Oh yeah - MO - what's with ALL your "O"s now being in capitals - just got used to filtering out the "MO" capitalisations and now back to square one; very hard to read the posts (odd how that can work - guess it works on the same technique as initial caps in titles being a real PITA to read...). Not a swipe - just curious....

<<notes you said "there are exceptions">>

Oh, OK! Jolly good old chap!

    Each to their own!

What a boring world if we all had the same opinions!

I'm quite fussy about my hip hop and agree there's a lot mediocre crap out there, but also some very progressive inventive stuff too!

I'm sorry it's out of my control!

It's all done by a tiny dwarf MOnkey who sits on my shift key and stares with one eye on the MOnitor and the other on where my fingers are typing. When he sees me going for an M - O combo, he hops on the shift key for me. That's why I have two shift keys, one for him to sort the MO out and another for me to use !"£$%^~@ etc...

The "O" thing is only when talking to vOOdOO............ cos he started it :D

Yes IME, I'd definitely agree with that observation too. :)

Well you know what the answer is dont ya? Put it through a Naim rig, that'll drag a beat out of virtually anything, resistance is futile you will feel the pulse quick march 1-2-1-2! ;)

Have you got any good recommendations then? I'm open to suggestion? About the nearest I've got is a few albums of Aim's stuff - quite like him/them (not sure - saw them live in Fabric in February (very very good!) but I think it's a "him"?) - that stuff's pretty good.

It's all the BS gangsta lyrics that do my head in - at least when stuff like Straight Outta Compton (which I own) came out it was groundbreaking. OK so we're onto rap here but :)

I must get round to acquiring "As nasty as they wanna be" by 2 Live Crew thoughh - that was one sweet album!

Any Rae & Christian album, they are on Grand Central Records too.

They are a mix of hip hop and funk

    ...but,but,but...it's shit!

btw I saw on an advert that spiky haired miserable Fame Academy winner Alex Parks got her own version of it, it's enough to make you weep.

On palatable Hip Hop, try to download 'The rebirth of slick (cool like that)' by Digable Planets. I'm also very fond of the latest Pole cd (it was £6.99 at cd-wow not long ago) which is a dubby, electronica hiphoppydon'tstoppy kind of thing, very nice.
...ooooor Pen Jakke who does it all in Norwegian!

Bought both version of the CD single, but not the film soundtrack (yet?) or Mr Jule's album. :)

Still need to borrow a copy of the film on DVD or wait for someone I know to buy it and invite myself over for a viewing. ;)
