    .........not much has been said on this subject over here....but I think most people have been following the events, to a greater or lesser extent, so I thought I'd throw this in;

Just reading though a popular tabloid report on the subject (if its to be believed) ....apparantly portugese police are refusing the assistance of highly trained UK sniffer dogs in this case.

these dogs can trace a scent 28 days old.....but time (fast) is running out. The dogs/handlers have been poised form day one (to their intense frustration).......but the local cops won't accept the assistance.....

What makes you think they haven't got and used, their own sniffer dogs?

I gather they DO have them, + HAVE used them......but the British ones are said to have an especially accute sense of smell....more so than most.

ie they'll pick up a scent even after stuff has been cleaned.

I don't know ,Bob, I only read a report on the web site of a populer newspaper (it wouldn't let me copy a link) of , shall we say, three letters.

Seems a shame to waste any chance after all the present/recent effort...........(?)

How many children have gone missing since? Why haven't we heard about them to the same extent?

I actually thought we were doing rather well with no threads on the subject here as it was about the only place on the web where there wasn't. It's ridiculous. I saw a missing notice in the window of a car in yorkshire... for someone gone missing in portugal.

I'm with Isaac on this one.
If her parents were not well paid medical types would we still have the media barage?
If the parents had been low cost council house dwellers i am sure the would of been chastised for leaving a young girl on her own.

thats exactly my, and a lot of other people thoughts on this and it deeply saddens me...
it almost has that feeling of when diana died - not many people knew her, but it seemed like the whole country mourned...

Exactly... who in this country noticed that Mother Teresa died in that same week?

David - at no point did I say help was not justified. My point is that she's not the only missing child needing that help, and with the huge concentration on one girl in this respect there's no doubt in my mind that it is taking help away from other similar cases.

I did, and felt rather sad that she didn't get the recognition that I thought she deserved. My US boss even had the audacity to criticise her for supporting some dodgy businessman/woman in the US (can't remember the details), suggesting that this is the reason that Mother Teresa would never be great in her eyes:rolleyes:
I feel for Maddie's parents but I have to agree with this.

Ditto; was that report correct that the parents had been spotted NOT returning to the villa during the meal to check on Maddie?

If so, that seems almost as irresponsible as not having James Bulger on reins, or at least keeping a proper eye on him.

I'm not sure why some stories grab the headlines, like those two girls who were killed by the caretaker, or Jamie Bulger as mentioned above. Terrible shame though, I don't like to imagine what the parents are going through. I also saw a poster on a car in Yeovil, which is really strange to be honest, it makes me wonder about the people who put them in their car, what do they hope to achieve?

I must admit I'd not leave my kids asleep in a hotel room and go down the road for a meal in any country, it's a sad reflection on the world but it's simply not a risk I'd take.

I am so sorry for her parents and the guilt of what ifs that they will feel for ever. I do hope that Maddie is found and found soon. it is a tragedy that we have to share our humanity with such creeps. The offender that raped my granddaughter whilst at school got sentenced to 5 years today - He deserved Life!!

This is where the law very definitely doesn't reflect public opinon; everyone with whom I've had this sort of discussion is of the opinion that child abusers/paedophiles/rapists deserve life sentences, and I mean LIFE.

    exactly right Mr C IMHO.

I remember sitting in a car with a very close relative, and we'd all just been told she had terminal brain cancer.

Princes Diana's death was all over the car-radio, and I remember thinking I just don't give a f**k.

    I know.

Well, yes, very high media coverage I do agree....

Its a good job someones helping them because the local police force do seem (I stand to be corrected here) to have been imperfect at times. Easy to say I guess but a Uk police man was quoted as saying that the case should have been cracked reasonably promptly.

Maybe this high profile story will serve to help other cases in the future?

To be brief, I don't think anyone is impressed with this, certainly not me.

I can only assume the parents relaxed a shade too much.

We all make mistakes and no ones perfect.

It doesn't mean to say some one can nick your kid, though.

    Spot on mate.

I myself live in a shared house in Brent Council and the amount of things i see the aftermath of(Police,Ambulance ETC)stuff thet happens, that never make it to the LOCAL paper disgusts me.

The paper in question is a respected local gazette dealing with day to day local life and never deals with the 'dark'stuff that happens in the area but has plenty to say about minor Jewish occurences(Girl mugged on bus-racial because of her faith).

A few weeks ago, i was on the way to work and saw the local park cordoned off, and later found out through local residents, that a girl of 15 was raped and left to fend for herself.
I never read a single sentence about the incident in said paper(which i read weekly)which i wager the rich part of the local community are thankful for.

God forbid their property value depreciates.

Where did i say it was OK to take a kid, can you show me?
I was making a point about media hype and how people are treated different by their social status.

Very easy to say, almost amusing seeing as our police forces seem completely unable to solve some of the most basic crimes.

compared to the attrocities happening every day across the world, the abduction of one child in portugal has been given much more media attention than it should get in proportion to global events.
