Making a DVD - quality

Hi folks.

With a long film (2hrs plus):

recording, using a DVD recorder/HDD
1. at LP (1/2) speed
2. at standard speed, then use computer software to compress onto 1 disc (size 4.7).

GENERALLY, which method is likely to produce the better result? Any experiences?
