I'm not sure why it should be the case, but I've yet to hear any digital source give half decent vinyl a run for its money. I'm no vinylphile, i have way more cd than vinyl, but I've nothing on silver disc or hard drive that touches decent 50-60's classical recordings on the old black discs.

Why is that? Is digital just inherently broken as a process despite being up to the task mathematically? Were they concentrating on frequency response and signal to noise ratio so much that they forget about signal integrity?

    What went wrong?

Have you ever entertained the idea that it is your digital reproduction medium that is incapable of delivering the goods in the correct manner?

Or maybe, to continue the ever-more-out-of-control spiralling off-topic, the culprit is negligent CD transfer: I can't believe there's much wrong with the 24-bit digital files the studio relies on as the primary masters . . .

it could indeed be the 16 bit master that's the culprit, my 174.6kzh 24 bit Mozart sounds exceptional. The string tone is almost up there with decent Decca.

    Almost.

    Maybe my DAC is lacking...

I don't think he can be accused of anything other than on topic posting, and nairy a mention of his own product and no pushing of Beresford doctrine. ;-)
