I've just booked me hols....3 weeks in France... woohoo ... although pissed that I didn't think of going earlier and catching Le Tour.
Was just wondering what the best maps to get around with are? Green tops or Michelin or what...not used small maps in Europe before. Need something with enough detail to show campsites and local interest.
    Cheers,
    HM

The best maps of France are IGN (Institute Geographique Nationale), the French equivalent to the OS. Next best are Michelin.

(who, in another life, relied very heavily on maps for scouting film locations, especially in France / Continental Europe)

    Agreed on IGN...
If you want a net-based map then www.mappy.com is the best for France.

I too reckon the IGN maps of France as I used quite a few of them many years ago when walking through the High Apls, TMB and other walks. They are very good for showing the GR walking routes with first class paths, conturs and mountian huts. May I suggest that you visit Stanfords by browser or in person and get lost for a couple of hours in their extensive collection of maps and guide books.

Is it cheaper to get these maps in France or should I put in an order with Stanfords?

If I were you I would get the maps from Stanford's and spend a bit of time planning the trip as well as making full use of any other information you can discover about the area on the net. Lastly I'd follow all that brainwork with a few bottles of good red just to get in the mood.

No idea about the cost of the maps in France vs cost in Stanfords.
