    Hi,

With a very limited budget to work with to rplace an ageing mission dad 5 I have had a new marantz 5001 recomended but have also seen a cd 6000 (without remote) s/h (reputable souce) for slightly less.

Modding is very much in mind.

Whats the best bet, any opinions on this?

    cheers!

the cd6000ose is a much better bet imo. Much better built and has a weightier bass response. Don't worry about the lack of remote- think any Marantz cd remote will operate it!
Wouldn't pay over a ton for it though.

i basically wouldn't touch the 5000 series CD players with a bargepole. Far too flimsily built- i've known 4 users of them- 3 were at a school (although only used by teachers) and 1 private and all have needed new laser mechs despite having 2 year warranties.

If you wanted to mod a Marantz i would grab ahold of the older players with the swing arm mechs such as the CD52, CD50 etc or even the CD80 or 94 :)

Is there actually anything wrong with the DAD5? I suspect it is a pretty decent player despite its age.

I nearly bought a CD5400 at one stage - glad I didn't now, having just read what Rory posted about the 5000 series and the problems with it.

    Hi Tension,

No, there is nothing currently wrong with it. In fact it has performed very reliably for the 12 years I have had it (2years old then). My reason for looking to change is that I feel that I don't feel I am getting full resolution from the system and am very sceptical that the mission is doing as much as, say a more modern player, with the advantages modern technology (transport/chip etc) have brought.

What is the rest of your system?

Does the DAD5 have a digital out? You could give the Behringer DEQ2496 a go, I know some good mods for it.

    naim 72/140/flatcap
    ruark sceptre speakers
    entech DAC on mission
    i/cs by zanash
    nac A5 speaker cable

Unfortunatley finances are very limited, partly why I was looking at modding........marantz seems very popular.

remind me what the behringer does? cdp again?

    cheers!

The DEQ2496 is a digital room correction system that has some pretty good DAC's in it and with a simple mod its even better sounding. With the mic for doing the room correction it comes in around £220 new. It is a stonking bargain.

whta do you think one would do for my system.......more base extention......more precise treble perhapts?

If the cdp isn't reading it off the disc (I suspect tobe the case) will the behringer help?

i agree they seem very reasonably priced.

I suspect your player is reading most of the information off the disk and a clock mod in the future would probably help as well.

From the room correction you would mainly notice more even and better controlled bass. It should not be used for anything above 200Hz really.

The better DAC would give you more detail, smoother sound, etc... all you expect from that sort of thing. The mods I can show you, or do for you make a lot of difference in that area too.

Otherwise I would recommend a Meridian 206 player like RobHolt just got, but I feel the Behringer with the mods gives as good sound and also has room correction which is no small thing. You can ask Rob what he thought of the modded DEQ2496 as I took it to his place a while ago. He said it sounded a lot like a Naim CDS1 (I think)

To me the Behringer had a sense of grip and drive that reminds me of the old multibit Naim players. It is excellent even in stock form but loses a little harshness and gains transparency with the output mod.

The Meridian 206 is very odd because it makes me smile lots and is the only machine I've heard in ages that challenges my turntable as the main source. I haven't got to the bottom of it yet but perhaps is has something to do with lots of discrete circuits and very low OP amp count - just two I believe.

PS: I think the DAD5 is early Bitstream - pre the DAC7 chip in which case a Behringer will probalby be a substantial upgrade.

Yes, I was reading about the Behringer last night.

A very interesting idea and good price but what about those XLR sockets and the mic? I don't especially want to have to change cables again!

The meridian sounds intersting but (no offence Rob!) thats quite an old player too! If you compare it favourably to vinyl thats says a lot for it.

well as an owner i would have to say that i like mine and it has responded to a few mods exceptionaly well. don't believe me ask zanash. after a few mods it came very close to a quad cd 99 @ £1000 it has a lovely warm and engageing sound with deep base and fine vocals. i agree as standard the base was lacking but the mods are quite easy and not expensive
