As someone who doesn't drive I find MOst of your merc', bmw, jag, etc... arguments boring.

I'd probably choose Jag or go for a Lexus myself.

However saying that, just noticed a merc advert using Aphex Twin for the music! A true sign of class me thinks :D

Heheh lol, I find Dennis Trident II buses more interesting than the latest Farreri! I simply have no need whats so ever to drive.

    Maybe when I am older.

I believe they made a lexus with a Marc Levenson head unit in it as an optional extra.

    ahhhh, men of true taste.
actually mecedes advertising has been brilliant in the past few years. they did a couple with really catchy tines and then their piece de resistance the 'lucky star' advert with benicio del toro.
what's the best bmw can pull out? a 7 series in a swimming pool and a dog that can't walk.
    cheers

    pennance,
although i admire your taste in women your taste in transport is sadly lacking. also your sense of style is stuck in the darkest depths of the gothic 80's what with those trousers. ;) :D

Julian - BMW ads (in the UK) have always had a very cool minimalist style which I think is fantastic - the one a few years ago for the M5 on the Utah salt flats being my personal favourite.

I have to agree about the Mercedes "Lucky Star" advert though. Brilliant. It was also for one of the very few Mercs I actually like, the SL55. There was so much interest in it that they were considering making an actual film based on the "trailer" that was the ad. As an ad though I don't think it was that successful as very few people realised it was an ad at all, let alone a Mercedes one.

Been trying to find a download of the film on the net for ages but can't seem to find one :(

    pennance,
what pray tell is wrong with my taste in transport? it has 4 wheels (the correct number naturally), is big enough to take my svelte self and is reasonably fast. now that i've got some new brakes it even stops  . it also pretects me from the weather and means i don;t have to look like an extra from the rocky horror picture show when i go out.

    michael,
some of the past bmw ads have indeed been pretty good. it's just their current crop that i find a little shoddy when compared to the competition, it seems like they are relying on the badge to do the selling, although that seems to be working at the moment although i think they're going to have to pull their fingers out for the new 5 series. the lexus sc430 is another example of a good car advert imho as were the mg z series print ads.
    cheers

I think the new 5 series is already selling itself. Here in Portugal (where it came out a little earlier than in the UK) they're already all over the place. A friend of mine was over at my place yesterday and there was one in the street - his reaction:

"check out the new 5 series down there - isn't it just beautiful?"

I'd have to say I agree entirely. Bangle was ahead of his time and as a result BMW are now ahead of the curve (sic) in design terms. There's already evidence of Bangle's influence in other cars now (like the new Ferrari 612S). It's amazing how dated the old 5 series and 7 series now look

As for best car advert, it has to be the Honda Accord "isn't it great when things just work" one.

It's a fantastic ad - and it's not special effects, either! If you go to the Honda Accord website, and fill in a form, they'll send you a free DVD* of the ad (called 'Cog'), which includes a wee making of documentary! :MILD:

    Dunc

    * Or at least they did a few months ago when I got mine. ;)

BMW did a series of short films, all called "The Driver" IIRC and that's available from their site too (the american one) or at least it was. They've got some pretty big name actors/directors (i.e. Gary Oldman in one, John Woo directing one) and it's well worth picking up.

Oh yes - fogot about those :) I have them all on DVD (well VCD I made from the internet downloads) and superb they are too. The John Frankenheimer directed one (Ambush) is probably my fave. All have Clive Owen acting the part of the driver.

erhmm, cough cough... how do they make those wheels roll up hill then without SFX. It is some sort of new Honda anti-gravity gadget that they forgot to publicise? ;)

The rest of tha ad looks genuine though and I have to say it makes me smile every time I see it. Love those windscreen wipers walking across the floor :)

Depends what you mean by special effects. I think what Gambit meant was that there was no computer CGI trickery going on. The wheels were made to roll uphill with specially placed weights inside the tires, in my book that doesn't count as SFX.

The whole thing is a single take and took 606 goes to get right
