Is there anyone on these boards whose music taste extends to more brutal kind of music? Bands like, the crown, decapitated, vader, carcass, nile, cannibal corspe, napalm death etc. etc? I realise it's not to everyones tastes, but just wondering if there are any HEAVY metal fanatics on here? Or even plain old legendary metal - rhoads era ozzy, maiden, early sabbath??

    Hi Mutant

Yep, I like to spin the occasional bit of grindcore. Not heard of all the names you mention as I haven't kept up with the heavier side of stuff over the last couple of years(getting older... ;) ), but I was listening to Napalm Death's "Harmony Corruption" just the other day. Not their heaviest but I like it. Haven't heard Carcass in ages so must dig some out - do you like any of the late-eighties stuff like Death or Obituary?

I'm also a big fan of early Sabbath stuff too - you just can't beat those early vertigo pressings IMHO - as well as the two they did with Ronnie James Dio.

I like flowers and kittens too, by the way :)

Death are awesome yeah, especially 'scavenger of human sorrow'. Not heard much of obituary, probably only a song or 2. If you like death though, check out control denied, chuck shuldiner's (R.I.P.) other band. Also, if you get chance, listen to decapitated - an awesome band (although if you're familiar with vader, they're just a younger version).

Not too partial to later sabbath, dont really like dio's singing.

i definately like a bit of metal, although probably the more conventional or classic kind.

would be interested to hear some of the bands you mentioned.

I like the Sabbath stuff, along with Iron maiden, metallica, pantera, motorhead, sepultura and i do love all things zeppelin who i have heard of being described as "heavy metal" although i wouldn't say so.

    any recomendations then?

Thanks for the recommendations - my personal fave from Obituary was always their first, 'Slowly we rot', with 'Leprosy' being my most played Death album. I'll keep an eye(ear?) out for Decapitated as these sound pretty interesting - no soundcard at work though so will have to wait til later.

I know what you mean, I think, as it was a bit of a departure from the earlier sound Sabbath had, but I was a fan of the stuff that Dio had done before joining Sabbath, so had already acquired the taste so to speak. A bit like olives I guess.

If you're into maiden, listen to 'in flames' and 'arch enemy' (the latter formed by ex-carcass members), both significantly 'heavier' than maiden, but both using nice guitar melodies and harmonies.

By sepultura, im hoping you mean early max cavalera era stuff, not their new material ;)

Everyone should listen to racer x, paul gilbert is a guitar god, and while you're at it, yngwie malmsteen, and joe satriani - both very good if you like guitar virtuosos (although satch isn't really 'metal').

I'm not too keen on leprosy, i've not heard the whole album, but the songs i've heard lacked decent recording (maybe these were just crappy mp3's i heard though). My most played death album would probably be 'symbolic', although this is one of their weakest efforts (but very listenable).

Brutal truth are another very good grindcore band circa the 'golden' era, i was unlucky enough to miss their ex-drummers new band play at a local club, from all accounts they were very good :(.

I'm not too familiar with dio's stuff away from sabbath, apart from rainbow and dio, neither of which i like much.

P.S. I do like other stuff aside from heavy music (but not as much) :)

Well, if you like the 'classic' metal sound and like Sabbath and Metallica, if you haven't heard them I'd highly recommend Budgie. Any of their first 3 or 4 are ace IMHO although I'm not sure about availability - there's a great 'best of' called 'A decade of fumbling' that I've seen on ebay for reasonable money which I'd thoroughly recommend.

Any of the Deep Purple stuff with Ian Gillan('Machine Head', 'In Rock' 'Who Do We Think We Are') on vocals, and I've always been a bit partial to earlier Saxon stuff too.....,Tygers of Pan Tang...in fact I'm a fan of most of what's known as the new wave of british heavy metal stuff(maiden are included in this, I think) - anything, really, from about 1979 to 1983. I've just done a google search for 'new wave of british heavy metal' and have found loads of matches - the online encyclopedia that comes up on top is a pretty good starting point, I reckon.

    Have fun with it....

Do Panterra count? Only got Far beyond driven but I saw them live during that tour - they made me deaf in minutes but it was worth it!

I'm seing Maiden next Friday :) Well - if my tickets ever go to where they're SUPPOSED to. I hate Ticketbastard...

Cannibal Corpse - hmm, not sure about them but Napalm Death can be OK in small doses. I just got some Electro Hippies stuff which is pretty grimey stuff - nice :)

I saw maiden earlier this year (last year?? cant remember, at some crappy festival anyway) and they didnt disappoint. They played a few naff songs and missed out 'Aces high', but a good set in all. I was pleased that they weren't supporting their new album when i saw them though, they only played one song which was enough, their new album is nothing compared to earlier releases.

I may be wrong here as I've not got my albums to hand, but didn't this lot originally(still?) feature Dan Lilker from S.O.D./Nuclear Assault? Again, one I've not heard in a while but will have a hunt when I get home.

You're right about the sound of 'Leprosy' - it's not MP3 compression, by the way, it's just bad production - but that roughness is one of the things I like about it. Same goes for the first Obituary one, too, and early(pre-roadracer) Sepultura stuff as well.

thanks for the recomendations guys, will have to look into some of these bands a bit more.

I love deep purple, fortunately for me my parents have a few of their LP's in their collection which are now on permanent loan!

by S.o.D do you mean stormtroopers of death? Ahh, Sgt. D and the sod :D Not sure if the line-up had him in, something i'll have to look into.
It's sad that S.o.D. split, they were influential to my crappy grindcore 'joke' (read 'band' :p) BumRush.

Early sepultura is quite good, but sadly, the only song most people have heard is 'roots' and any more recent material, chaos ad is a good album :)

Bolt thrower are another band you could listen to if you like that kind of production (it does have its charms, but death were too good, they needed polished producing, otherwise they would sound as good).

Basically, listen to any early earache and roadrunner artists for good music.

Great album - I'd recommend the album before it as well(Vulgar Display of Power), as it's probably their best. Worth it just for the vocals on 'F....... Hostile' - absolutely superb. Did you find the drum sound a little weird when you saw them? It was good, I thought, but really artificial sounding IMHO.

Nice avatar angi73, by the way - is that a 635?

Bolt Thrower - this is all bringing back loads of memories. Great artowrk for their album IIRC, and a great band. Agree on the early Earache and Roadrunner recco, and would add Peaceville to the list too - they had a fair bit of leftfield stuuf on there, of which Kong and Global Genocide Forget Heaven were my faves.

I feel a seriously heavy weekend coming on - I don't think my girlfriend will be pleased with you lot....;)

    Not a bad guess but...

its actually a 1971 onwards 3.0S or si saloon which is similar to the 3.0CSi which dates from the same period. The 3.0CSI was the one that went on to spawn the CSL, or famous "batmobile" of the 70's. [IMG]

I think it's commonly regarded as the first in the modern era of BMW's with a silky 2.8 staright six developing 180bhp.

Im far from a BMW only man, infact i used to positively hate them, but i have come to appreciate them after riding in various "M" cars.

it wasn't my first choice for an avatar, i dowloaded it for use as an icon, but sseemed to be the only image to fit.
She does look rather smart though :)

    Ahh Boltthrower..
I remember them supporting us at the Opera on the Green many years ago.
Bit samey for me, I'm afraid though I can just about cope with Napalm Death :D
Prefer Suicidal Tendencies, specially "Suicidal for Life", and for something a bit more varied I like to skank along with their offshoot, Infectious Grooves.. Check "Violent and Funky" off Groove Family Cyco. Serious pumpin bass..
And at the more alternative end, though occasionally heavy, I'm a huge fan of Primus - check Seas of Cheese, Brown Album and AntiPop..

Bolt Thrower OPENED for you :D:O??

Primus are good, les claypool has some fine bass skills. If you like bassy stuff like that, check out victor wooten :) (not strictly at all like primus, but VERY good bassist)

Yes - luckily most of the crowd hadn't arrived by the time they were on.. We were a bit more jazzpunkfunk so our audiences weren't too similar..
