    hi,
was just having a lazy saturday morning reading over some old hi-fi worlds and found the following written by LJK Setright in the october 2003 issue (p25)...

which shines a new light on what mick found.
it also begs the questions. were all 'briks manufactured out of phase and reversing the phase improved things or did the previous owner of mick's speakers reverse the phase to 'improve' soundstaging. whichever, this does seem to be a 'tweak' that's out in the public domain so perhaps all those who listened and liked mick's system weren't so cloth eared as was first thought.

    cheers

Ju, I remember an arcticle he ( LJK Setright) wrote in 1988 regarding the Astra 2.0ltr 16V, saying it was the best car he'd driven up to that point in his long career, I think it was Car magazine, just goes to show the chap still has taste :D

    tone,
the astra may have had suspension made from bits of wood and blu-tak and a bodyshell as prone to rusting as a lancia but the origional uncatted 16v engine was a stormer - except for the tendancy for the heads to become porus that is. if i remember correctly it was a cosworth design and was one of the first 16v engines to actually have some low down torque. unfortunately vauxhall have always had the habit of putting monster engines in a toss chassis.
ljk setright had a prelude as his personal transpot iirc.
    cheers

I thought only one of Micks bass units was out of phase?

JU, the engine was ok 20 XE ? ithink, We even did a couple for the rally boys a resepectable 260Bhp, would give more, but for long reallys ideal, had to do oil pump and imor rod bolts as a basic, else it had a tendancy to 'seperate it's internals'
Also needed throttle bodies IIRC. Wm

LJK was definitely a "weird" chap.

I remember only too well how he spent several years denigrating everything unless it was built by Honda. God knows how much they must have paid him for that.
Some of it was definitely techno-babble rubbish.

    Gotta laugh:D

As the generation of a good stereo image relies on accurate phase alignment, it's kind of funny that the only way to get decent imaging from 'Briks is to f**k it up:D

My Dad's G reg Ashtray (a 1.3L model Belmont) is falling to bits - paint has been flaking off it since DAY ONE (brand new, it had problems) but the engine is tip top - it's on the verge of going round the clock for the 2nd time. It has had a new gearbox mind, but the engine itself...

And our old school car was a standard Ashtray estate 1.6 - that went round the clock 3.5 times before the school got rid of it - ask Lhatkins about servicing that thing - everything from redlining it with a knackered headgasket to 135 mph down Haldon Hill (and 110 UP it!) - and the school still managed to sell it for market value...
