Ahh I have been hit by the genuine windoze thing! It said it had updates I clicked okay expecting to see a list of them and it just went ahead and installed this thing. Now when I boot up it moans at me and there is something in the taskbar all the time.

How can I fix this broken piece of software?

Just for the record I wouldn't mind paying if it was as good as OSX. Maybe I should try switching to Linux.

They broke the broken software! lol!

I bought Windows 95 and 98 as they were good. Oh and 3.11. Since then I don't consider any of them to be finished yet. As I said, if they worked to an acceptable level I'd buy it.

was in same situation, £92 fixed that (xp pro)

my conclusion was this was a warning. next update, and xp stops working completely.

Purchasing and installing a genuine copy will I think do the trick.

PS a mate of mine knocked up a copy of these and he only charged me the price of a couple of beers but now they don't seem to work too well, what should I do? I was wondering if it better to purchase the genuine product from an authorised dealer or should I ask my mate to try and do something better the next time?

I'd like a Mitsubishi EVO does that mean I can take any Kia Picanto I see parked as 'it's not as good'.

Be a man, if you're going to nick stuff don't try and justify it. Just do it. ;)

An OEM XP Home is only about £50, I'd say it's worth the money to save the hassle of the anti piracy garbage they've had to include in the OS. Which of course just makes it even more complicated and probably a bit more unreliable.

Well £50 isn't so bad I suppose, I thought it was more than that. Though I do need networking so I guess thats £100 for Pro. Oh but the networking is so half arsed it can hardly be called that, and I would resent paying for it...

I see it more like if you pay a builder to do some work on your house and he does a really bad job. Do you pay him? No. But you still have to live in that house! I am forced to use XP because of their greedy attitude. They made software that only worked on XP despite it not needing to be that way. That forced me to use it but made me resent it even more. I don't want to encourage them to be lazy programmers though. I would have bought a genuine copy of 2K otherwise, that was a good OS. Rather than XP they should have tightened up 2K.

If XP stops working completely so be it, I'll switch to Linux in the end if given the push. So will a lot of other people. The whole of China for example. Microshaft don't have the Microballs to stop it working.

Call it tight if you want. I call it principle.

    Sorry you've lost me now.

How is it I've got my XP machines networked and even the Macs can browse them. Though they're running OS-X which I had to buy to use the new software I required, that only worked on OS-X.

You're not forced to use XP.

try searching "xp activation" on ebay i'd say about £4 should cover it.

I have two pc's and I used one copy of windows that I own and I constantly change hardware so all the registering stuff is annoying,

the crack does work or you can get into system 32
and change a few numbers 0's to 1's etc but I can't remember how I did it, try google.

Well fine I'm a thief. But I really don't care. They have caused me so much anguish with their bad programming and attitudes that if I had paid for it I would have killed some of them by now!

Simple as this, when they made good stuff I paid for it. When they don't, I wont.

Try networking with a Linux domain server and it becomes a bit more tricky. I have an XP to XP network with my laptop too and even that is pretty flaky. Nothing to do with how it is set up, it just works some days and not others! User accounts and permissions are completely screwed up. How about not even asking where you want to install it?! How about all these updates? Why not make it right in the first place (SP2?).. HOW many security holes?! Well of course we want IE to have complete control of the computer... One update completely stopped my PC booting until I updated the BIOS. WHY do I need XP to run some software that would run under 2K if they were not so greedy as to make you use XP? SO, so much pain and wasted time caused by M$.

I'll give them credit though, I like what they are trying to do. They need to get it working more reliably though and re-think some of these 'helpful' things which just take control away from the user.

How well do the windows emulators for Linux work these days?

Anyway enough of this. I’ll give that fix a go. If it doesn’t work I’ll shove off to Linux.

I tried a hack first for bootcamp but it soon became blatently obvious that if you want regular proper updates for XP to protect yourself from the nasties you are going to have to stump up. I got an OEM Version on Ebuyer and am glad I did it.

Plus one very reasonable argument is, if you did not have the pirated version in the first place, the software would not have caused you the hassles which is preventing you from purchasing it

xp pro is £92, microsoft email u a serial number after a couple of days, and a link you follow to the microsoft website that validates your installation of xp (checking files and version numbers etc to make sure it's all present and correct), and then allows you to type in the serial number.
between 2 and 4 weeks you will receive the original cd.

Not really. XP is a lot more bloated.
