If you have a mobile phone, be wary!

A few minutes ago I received a call on my mobile phone. No number appeared (not even "private number", it just said "call").

I answered and the other person said "This is so-and-so from Vodafone customer service. Please confirm your postcode and date of birth"

I figured that this was to do with a letter I sent them at the beginning of the week, but then it struck me that maybe.....

So, I said "What is this concerning?". They hung up.

I called Vodafone customer service and told them what had occurred, and they said that no calls to me had been made from them.

I have to conclude that this is a phishing scam moved out of the realms of the internet, trying to obtain security details for my phone. Presumably they will use this information to request a new SIM card from vodafone and make calls on your account.

So, if you receive a call like this from someone claiming to be your mobile phone provider DO NOT GIVE THEM INFORMATION. Call your provider (191 from a vodafone handset, I don't know the numbers for other networks) and talk to them. If it's genuinely your provider they won't mind you calling them back.

I have some stupid american female computer voice calling me telling me I have won a holiday, phone this premium rate number to get 15 mins no doubt of recorded info telling how wonderful it is.
Then at the end, I have heard they tell you the details and its a big swizz. I would get these scum in a cage and attack them if I had the chance. This personal crime data thing makes my blood boil big style.

Funny you mention that damn frog! I work as an IT Techie in a local secondary school. When I went into one of the IT suites this morning to pick up some printer test pages (I'm creating a new XP build for that room, as they are still on 98), a number of them were attempting to imitate that damn frog. If I'd have been the teacher in charge, it would have been detention for the lot of them - just for being bl--dy annoying!

I'm always getting that; we're on the Telephone Preference wossnmae, and cold calls have all but stopped apart from this American woman. Oh, and the Labour party soliciting for votes at the time of the General Election. My daughter told them to sling their hook.

My girlfriend had a call yesterday asking for details. They also claimed to be from her network (O2) and something about phone insurance. She asked what exactly they wanted, and they hung up on her.

As for the pre-recorded calls, they seem to have stopped now, but we were getting them a few times a week.

Its simple to weed this sort of thing out on mobiles, if you have Nokia (I'm sure other phones do this as well) put all your contacts into profiles with distinct tones, then put the default tone to none, that way your mobile will only ring if someone calls who is in your phone book, job done, no more annoying calls. Great anti spam / scam device, pity I can't do that on my home phone!
