    Hi All,

The cover CD on this months Mojo is worth the cover price on its own:

    1. Amen Corner - Expressway to Your Heart
    2. The Contours - Just a Little Misunderstanding
    3. Billy Preston - Billy's Bag
    4. Rod Stewart & PP Arnold - PP Arnold
    5. Timebox - Beggin'
    6. The Quik - Bert's Apple Crumble
    7. Tony Jackson Group - Fortune Teller
    8. The Animals - I'm Crying
    9. The Birds - Leaving Here
    10. Ike & Tina Turner - I Can't Believe What You Say
    11. Jimmy McGriff - All About My Girl
    12. Phil Upchurch Combo - You Can't Sit Down (Parts 1 & 2)
    13. The Small Faces - Get Yourself Together
    14. Bettye Swann - Make Me Yours
    15. Brenda Holloway - Every Little Bit Hurts

All top stuff and its been on constant rotation all week.

Listening to the Billy Preston, The Quik, Jimmy McGriff and Phil UPchurch Combo tracks (all top groovin Hammond B3-fests) made me drag out some Jimmy Smith and Booker T stuff and it got me thinking. I've always been a fan of that soul/funk Hammond sound but never really explored it and was wondering what albums some of you guys might recommend.

    Hi Uncle,

There are many items you can try. Here are a few.

Check Billy Preston. I have seen this album in Fopp for a £5

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...6772/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_11_2/202-2960307-3816630

Don't know which Jimmy Smith you have but there are many to choose from. Here is a very good introduction if you haven't got much.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...547/sr=1-15/ref=sr_1_2_15/202-2960307-3816630

Check out Reuben Wilson who has got produced some fine stuff. Here is an example.

Don't go without looking at Jimmy McGriff. Up there with the best. Here is a good one.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...7476/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_27_3/202-2960307-3816630

These sites have samples so you can check them out. I hope these get you going.

Thanks for the info. It seems there was a bit of a jumbo thread on this very subject over on PFM late last year. Now all I've got to do is decide whether to spend a fair bit of money and gorge myself on CDs or way too much money and seek this stuff out on the black stuff (a risky and pricy proposition I suspect).

Yeah they've been doing a good job on their cover CDs recently. Last month's (I think) Southern Soul CD was a goody. The Studio 1 CD a few months back was well worth listening to and before Christmas they did the Johnny Cash covers CD, also excellent ... the CDs are better than the magazine

On occasion :) To be fair its probably one of the better magazines out there. Though it does tend to focus on the old farts a bit. Still far better than Q, which I enojoyed once upon a time, but seems to have descended into a series of lists (always a sign that the journos have run out of ideas IMO).

Q always seemed to feature the same old favourites; U2 and REM were in every issue when I read it in the early 90s. Mojo is better for in-depth stuff, but that only works if the stuff they do in-depth interests you in the first place.

A good counterbalance would be The Wire (not Wired) the UK avant garde music mag
