Dunno - I guess I would define trance music as music that puts you in a trance/hypnotic like state. Most of the stuff I listen to does that, some just thinks its repetive shite though, fair play. My mind is warped enough to appreciate it though :MILD:

    guys,
most of the bouncy trance of the trance nation variety i would class as commercial trance or just trance. psy-trance is the good stuff i'm on about though, aside from those mentioned try cosmosis, the distance to goa series - i cannot recommend the early cd's in this series enough, some of the react series, flying rhino (as a label, their samplers and compilations are the real deal but a bit more laid back), celtic cross.
although i like most forms of electronic music from happy hardcore wavey hand stuff like the bonkers compilations to ultra chilled stuff and everything in between if i had to pick one type as my favorite it would be the psy trance stuff described above as it has a lot of energy and interesting musical development (although it takes a while).
    cheers

Mo - the Rex is a bit of a wreck in places, but the people are top. Very VERY good vibes and no-one gives a toss what you look like, so long as you don't act like a lager lout (you get the odd all-night drinker in the raves, and they're total w***ers). Even the bouncers agree they much prefer trance heads to rockers - they don't have problems with people on water and bean diets... Roll on Antiworld on the 20th!!!!

    Underworld isn't trance...

Platypus records have some very good trance stuff - a couple of the tracks on Loved Up are on that label (didn't even realise that until I got this Platypus sampler off of a mate). More commercial (but good) trance is like the stuff on Reactivate 10 or 13 - stuff like "No fate" by Limited Growth or "1998" by Binery Finery.

Paul - I MUST get some other Hallucinogen (the musical type, not the sweetie type) as I only have H in Dub - you reckon "Lone deranger" is good then? Mmm - should give Chaos another order (when I get paid!).

Leftfield I'd NEVER class as trance to be honest - intelligent dance/crossover maybe, but not trance...

Underworld's "Deep and dark and long" (the one in the nasty H withdrawel scene in "Trainspotting") could possibly be defined as trance - either way, it's a dirty track!

Psy-trance is defo where the action is though - fairly simple phat beats, but with lavish synth layering and whacked out (usually sci-fi film) samples over the top. Like I say, if you can still find it, Full on 6 - Trance waves is pretty good. So's "Psychadelic summer" (Transient records) - compiled by the EQ's Chichime lads - had a blinder there on my birthday! Also, GMS's Remixes CD is pure class - the remix of Hallucinogen's "Gamma goblins" is really really good...

I'm probably goingo to show my age here but try some Psychic Warrriors of Gaia. Not very banging mind you but should definitely get you there...
If Underworld ever made a trance track its gotta be Rez, which IMHO was bloody amazing, before they went all shouty and shite.

Underworld also made the track "kittens" which is one of my faves, and I'd regard it as trance. Whether or not Underworld is trance, I reckon they are great.

Dom, the Lone Deranger is very, very good IMO. I've got an MP3 copy at the minute, but its one of those albums that I still intend to get on CD, its that good.... I like in Dub as well. To be honest, I pretty much like all Hallucinogen/Shpongle stuff.

I was listening to Shponge (Are You Shpongled), Infected Mushroom (The Gathering) and Hallucinogen (The Lone Deranger) on Friday night after some magic mushrooms, and the music takes on a whole new meaning!
