You're making one of those JBL K2-clone thingie speakers, like the ones I heard (and liked) at Paul Messenger's. However, you'll be using the Friggin' Awesomes instead of having the bass bits in the same box.

    You crafty dog. ;)

I never said he was consistent  I suspect it's also a question of time/cost. I prefer the 7 to the 30 myself, but I'm a deaf old git who clearly likes harsh, metallic treble (that is the little I can actually hear).

Ahh, OK. 435Be it is then. I don't think your bank manager is going to be placated by that :D

Ah now the May project would be quite something Markus. Sadly I can only imagine the size of those things with 2 1500AL's in each cabinet.

I am looking at the 435Be though - I just can't stretch to the 045 as well :( Still, availability could yet be an issue - and it will take some time to build the crossovers!

Maybe this will help stimulate your imagination...

...it's a bit of a cheat, as these are actually quite small and are supposedly "Centre " speakers

Merlin, is there a place on the net where one can look up prices for the 1500AL, 435Be etc.?

    You could ask me :)
    435Be are 157,000 yen each
    1500AL are 210,000 yen each
    UT-045Be are 500,000 each
These are the published retail prices. YMMV.

That SK2 is mad :D Still at £8K a pair they are a little dear. I believe the Project May will be a D'Apolito array, somewhat similar to the 9500K2 but with the new drive units. So that's 225 ltrs for the 1500AL's to start with. Even I can't imagine living with those!

Sorry Julian, the thread has gone off kilter somewhat. Still think of the fun you could have building your own. Given that subs cost no more than 20% of retail to build, just imagine how far your money would go with a little research.

I'd be happy to add my 2 cents to anyone contemplating such a project.

Joel, surely they are taking the pith with those prices?

the main problem i have with self building is that i'm a komplete klutz when it comes to diy of any sort, know bog all about woodwork and even less about crossover design. as for assembling a crossover given a bag of parts - forget it. a wilmslow total kit would probably be possible for me but anything more complex is just not going to happen without spending lots on getting other people to do it for me.
    cheers

NOt at all, and in comparison with ALE, GOTO or TAD those are actually quite reasonable prices. THe AL1500s are a bit wimpy in comparison to the man-sized 18-inch TAD units, though :D
The trophy for taking the pith, biscuit or whatever you want to call it really goes to these guys
    http://www.kubotek.com/haniwa/index.html
These speakers are 180cm high and each speaker has 4 x 30cm TAD woofers + 1x 4xxxx series TAD compression driver. All driver have their own amps, and each channel is digitally divided, eq'd, delayed and phase shifted (three channels per speaker).
    Oh yes, 10hz~24kHz

If the cost of those JBL drivers really was as high as these prices seem to indivcate, no way would JBL be able to sell the complete loudspeaker at the price they ask. I also seem to remember that merlin indicated he got the 1500ALs at a substantially lower price.

    Rip-off Japan?

Have you ever heard a complete Goto system? I'm told it's quite an experience, but I have never laid ears on anything Goto myself.

    I don't think it's a case of Rip-off Japan.
I'm imagineJBL make a handsome profit on the K2s they sell here, so I would guess those prices do not reflect actual costs. Maybe JBL do not want people homebrewing their own K2s and selling them in competition, and so build a disinsentivising component into their pricing. Or maybe they don't make much money on the K2s after all.

No. I did hear a couple of drivers being used in a system a couple of years back. Can't say as I was bowled over particularly. I think you have to be a member of the GOTO cult to hear (and pay through the nose for) the magic ;)

In that first picture, those speakers look just like the 'soup dragon' from the clangers.

    I'll get me coat..

Don't they teach the young anything these days corner...

Those are "Haniwa" figures. These are coiled clay low-fired grave markers dating from the "Kofun" (tumulous) period (circa 250~550AD) that were probably intented to guard the defunct during the journey to heaven.
What those speakers should have been called are "Jomon", but that's a story for another day.
