    Ah - cool - I thought that's what you meant :) So it's one of those houses with a "borrowed light" style of landing is it - where the top of the doors have windows to let light into the hall during the day?

    Do any of these bulbs state a colour temp? I got a small-ish one for my bedroom, but it took AEONS to warm up, and even then, it was far too cold-a colour for the room (it was so green-blue, it reminded me of the description of the underground city and lake in that CS Lewis Narnia book (was it "The silver chair"? - can never remember...) - either way, I'd rather have a red glow like the dying sun of Charn from "The magician's nephew" ;). The tungsten bulb I have now is much more suited, but I'd prefer another energy saver...
