the word 'township', used in rochdale area since 1626, and also by the council to cover the areas of heywood and other districts has been banned by a local police officer, as it is thought to invoke connotations of apartheid type repression is s africa.

How can a local police officer ban anything in the name of PC? (No pun intended, although I did originally right PC instead of police officer:)). He's surely exceeding his powers. Any lawyers here?

It's nice not to live in a township anymore :D
As a resident of monkeytown I'm gobsmacked by the polices viewpoint. Time they did something useful.

Mind you the Americans aledgedly removed all the naughty words about mountains etc. It was too shocking for a hill to be called Pap. And the Victorians decided all the Piddles shopuld become Puddle. And as for trying to find Gropecunt Lane. Nigh on impossible.

I remember reading a letter from some PC nut who objected to the word "Dumb" not realising that the meanings "mute" & "stupid" have to completely separate roots and are not related at all.

Is it me or are the worst excesses of PC committed by the ignorant. (or as I was once corrected "It's not PC but Socially Correct")

    tom,
i am shocked and outraged that in this enlightened age anyone could call another human being ignorant. i propose that this word be struck from the dictionary and all instances be replaced by the phrase 'alternatively gifted'.
    cheers

    From Tom's link:

What we appear to have is an over-reaction by one police inspector who has decided that the police (nobody else, just the police) shouldn't use the word "township", as a response to a documentary revealing shocking levels of racism in the Greater Manchester police force. A bit daft, it would be better if they did something to address the issues the documentary raised, but hardly something worth getting worked up about.

So are you near me then Lieutenant. Twas on GMR earlier.
Heywood and Middleton are often called the armpit of Rochdale, so maybe township is quite an apt word.
Not long since though I saw a policeman hit someone in the face for no reason and then vanish. That was two weeks ago at Eastlands (MCFC's) ground. I wrote to the chief constable, but have as yet had no reply. Too busy making daft pronouncements?

Whilst having no truck with the pronouncements of the peoples' republics that constitute local government here in the north west this forum seems to be ripe with Daily Mail reader types.

    Hi,

I agree with Ian (Sideshowbob) on this. It's a knee jerk reaction by the police inspector about their racism. It is the job of town councils to rename areas, not the police. If the police don't want to call them townships, what is the problem?

What the GMR police should be looking at is getting down the crime rate and becoming better police.

Too right Dean. GMP enjoys a dreadful reputation. Not to long since a young gent was found dealing Cannabis at my wifes school. This was to 13 and 14 year olds. Now this school is one of the top few in the country, if you lived near you'd want your kids to go there no doubt. They rang the police and asked them to become involved, obviously wanting to set a precedence. The police's response 'It's not important enough, we don't investigate cannabis offences anymore....' Too busy checking speed cameras and deciding what towns should be called. That's when they're not assaulting random football fans and intimidating people on nights out. Sad to say my impression of GMP is not high. By the way would like to say I don't read the Daily Mail.

The most absurd example of this sort of thing comes, of course, from the USA. Orange County CA has ruled that computers are not to use the terms "Master" and "Slave" for drives sharing a controller channel...
