I bought a cd seperate one of the £40 Accustic Solutions things for my sisters christmas pressent and tested it today. There is was a scratch on the top of the surfice.

When I plugged it in there was an extremely loud hum but I connected it to the amp anyway to see if it worked it played fine but when I disconnected it the grounding post of the right channel output came off with the interconnect. I managed to get it half on but its damaged. I will need to go back with it tomorrow but I am not happy at all. How can sheds like this pass the Q/C tests?

Personaly I would have just bought a second hand cdp of ebay but my mum isnsists it has to be new.

I wish I had got a second hand Sony too. I don't think RS will be too pleased when I return the CDP in bits but then they should not make cheap crap in the first place.

actually, I have done that...got a valve amp of someone, and it arrived damaged. I took the bottom off, and tried to fix it, but it was riddled with problems. So the guy agreed to fix it. I am still waiting. I nullified any claim I had by taking it apart. Fair point as he didn't know I hadn't damaged it. Richers could well give problems and refuse if you have tinkered.

I didn't tinker with anything though, the grounding just came of with the interconnect.

Is the hum through the speakers? It might be that the grounding on the amp phono sockets isn't particularly great. We have this problem at work with a (quite expensive) third party (no names mentioned) AV processor, where the grounding scheme is a bit fragile. Try shorting the grounds all together externally and see if it quiets the hum.
