More than 1 pair of speakers to same amp?

Mate of mine has a Teac "pseudo" separates system (the 500 "reference" system) comprising of the A-H500i amp and a CD player and tuner.

He wants to mount some (stereo) speakers for it on the wall in the living room and ideally have the same amp driving a 2nd pair of speakers in the kitchen.

I told him that unless the amp had a SPK1 and SPK2 switch and two sets of binding posts it wouldn't be possible - I've no idea what happens if you try to connect 2 sets of speakers to the same outputs but I know it wouldn't be a good idea!

He's going to check the amp tonight but assuming it doesn't have 2 sets of speaker outputs (I'm pretty sure it doesn't) then what options does he have?

Are there any active speakers that he could connect up to the same binding posts - rather like hooking up the high level input for a subwoofer?

For the "main" speakers I've recommended him a pair of Dynaudio 42Ws - reasonably priced, excellent speakers which are designed to be used against the wall :)

All that two sets of binding posts do is allow the amp to see the two speakers in parallel.

You can do this on one set of binding posts. However, be aware that when you do this, the impedance seen by the amplifier decreases. If you put two sets of 8ohm speakers on in parallel the amp will see this as 4 ohms.

This is why you will see on the back of many amps with multiple binding posts that they can take 4ohms or more for a single set, but only 8 ohms or more for two sets.

Simplest thing is a QED speaker switching box but probably won't sound great.

yes, some of the QED ones aren't too bad- some even allow banana plugs now!!!

dynaudios on a little 30W Teac?
i would have thought little Mission M30s- Mission sell brackets purposely designed for these speakers, which neatly screw into the back of them.
not bad sounding really, for £90 or so, and easily driven

The Teac claims to be 50W into 8ohms and 80W into 4 ohms. The Dynaudio 42Ws are 4 ohm speakers though....

Those Missions look good though - and they're 8ohms (not to mention a hell of a lot cheaper).

    Thanks for the info guys.

I have a pair of Mission M72's in black that I was using in the kitchen with a pair of wall brackets to suit - would cost you less than the M30's new. The speakers are modest size bookshelf/standmount and sound OK. PM me if you are interested.

The guy has now decided he's going to move the Teac + his existing Bose :newbie: speakers to the kitchen and then get a 5.1 surround package for the living room.

I don't know - you try your best to help out your mates and then they totally ignore your advice :D

btw thanks for the offer NOS-4-A2.
