Very smart, esk. A Tabriz Zi arm and Shelter 901 as well, I see...I would imagine that's a pretty impressive sounding deck you've got there!

    It is!

I've got one of the Audioorigami P7 arms on order too.

I think it's gonna get even better.

The VPI silly? It is one of the most agreed upon TTs out there. Well engineered, packed with features sounds great and is priced reasonably. At the shows it is one of the most used TTs.
    So whats so silly?

I'm guessing it's the flywheel that's in question.

I want to know why though?

Why is that inherantly worse than a rubber belt?

This specific version emulates the Thorens TD 124 in using a belt to drive an idler wheel which in turn drives the platter. I can see no compelling engineering reason for this particular arrangement today.

Given the popularity of Garrards, Lenco's and old Thorens turntables I didn't think it would be long before a modern idler drive TT became available again. I just didn't expect it to be VPI that did it. I assume in their usual way VPI will make this 'upgrade' available to owners of their more normal, flywheel assisted, belt driven turntables which at least allows those customers to keep up with where the company is going. I'd also expect to see many favourable reviews commenting on the new found bass power resulting from this design change (a deficiency the reviewers had somehow missed in their previous appraisals) Step forward Roy!

it adds another degree of decoupling between motor and platter, could be good, could loose more speed stability than you gain on reduced motor noise transmission. infact very probably.

i'd take multiple belt drive over rim-rim contact drive anyday.

I doubt he'll bat an eyelid. It will be a huge leap forward toward audio Nirvana, so much so that we are practically, almost there, and yet, so will the next one. This isn't contradictory, though it seems to be, its simply a practical application of Gregorian Metaphysics.

    Hi Jim,

It is called the Heliosphere. It cost £2495.

You will have to get in touch with John Jeffries (Lumley, Metropolis Music, Sounds of Music) for more details.

Here are a few more details and pictures.

    Hi Jim,

get in touch with Sounds-of-music. John Jeffries designed the Stratosphere turntable, which cost loads, and this. I'm not sure if any other dealers have this deck in.

He will also tell you what other deck they sell.

The Lumley Heliosphere in the pictures on the sounds of music site
has a clearaudio motor unit/pulley/belt and by the looks of it a clearaudio platter.

edit (maybe the platter isn't a clearaudio I can see something on the top edge)
