actually.. just to add, it's the ridiculous OTT stands that these things are sited on (take a bow 'war of the worlds tripods') that make these things vulgar..

I've never seen that version of the Goldmund Reference before (looks like a much later version than the one I know). Have you got any more details on it? Many years ago it was the Goldmund Ref and the Oracle Delphi than inspired me to make my first turntable.

    Hi YNMOAN,

This version of the Reference is the latest one. They have recently decided to make it again in limited numbers. Not sure how much but it won't be cheap.

Here are bits of info on the turntable and also an interview with the top man at Goldmund.

It was all looking so promising, then this

Exclusive integral limited edition Phono PH8 Preamplifier using the new Goldmund 140dB A/D circuit
Analogue output using the latest new Goldmund Alize 6 D/A circuit with 140dB of dynamics
Digital output using "Swiss Chrono" zero-jitter 96kHz 24 bit connection to Universal Preamp
Built-in digital processor providing RIAA correction, and complete time/phase cartridge compensation

    What is the point???

Actually, I think this version is around $250,000

I didn't think the old one was that good. The Studio was a better turntable.

Quarter of a million bucks and you still have to wind it up? Something wrong surely?

Turntables are getting utterly ridiculous if you ask me. These prodcucts are effectively one off custom made pieces of engineering - designed to perfrom a relatively easy task. As such they represent the worst excesses of "high end audio" and the least "bang for your buck" in the entire world of comsumer electronics.

Compare that with something like a Garrrard 401 or SL1210. The sheer numbers involved ensured sensible pricing and an excellent return on your investment.

And half of these new Wunder Plattenspeiler are really poorly engineered. I've seen many of those on this thread, particularly in Munich at the show. With the exception of Brinkmann and SME, the build quality of the statement decks on display was uninspiring. No claims for revolutionary bearings. For extreme tolerances. Or for incredible speed stability. Just "see if you can lift it" experessions and loads of polished surfaces to catch the light. The most offensive has to be the entire range of Transrotor Fat Fritz or whatever they are called. The perspex equivalent of gold medallion and leopard skin thong wearing mullet touting blond tourists pissed up in Ibizan nightclubs.

If some twat want's to throw their money at some of this crap then I won't stand in their way - but they are as classless as the spiv like designers, sweating profusely at the thought of milking a fat cheque from a merchant banker for some heavyweight audiobling designed on the back of a fag packet and built in the same factory as half of the others.

Not touched them in weeks. You know what I think of German turntable aestetics.

In all honesty Markus, would you say that the current crop of super turntables represent anything other than an attempt to extort money from foolhardy senior citizens?

It does appear that a fair proportion of these decks they are designed to extract as much money as possible from the punter.
When I look at super large decks I cant help feeling the designer was thinking in the precidence below

    1/ profit potential
    2/ style
    3/ Chav factor
    4/ Sound quality

Its Likely that a decent engineer with sound quality absolutely as number one priority will come up with a better deck for 20th of the cost of this audio jewelery.

Audio is for anoracks not chavs

    Hi,

I think point is that they can and there is a market for it. They can make money for it. There are enough rich people in the world to sell these to.

I find it all interesting, whether it sounds good or not.

    Hi Mike,

In a lot of ways turntables have alwaya been ridiculous. It seems that now there has been an increase in the numbers of different decks on the market. Even though there is a market for decks, it is only so big. Companies are trying to make their products stand out more. This will mean there will be good and bad looking (& sounding) turntables.

These turntable were not cheap compared to the mass market. They did well because of their build quality and the fact that they were used in the entertainment industry (Radio, Broadcast, Clubs, etc).

The Garrrards did very well in the hifi market but results varied due the plinths they were built in.

The Technics SL1200/1210 weren't cheap but were very well bulit. The rising DJ culture in the late 70s/early 80s made these decks the legends that they are. People like Grandmaster Flash, Grandwizzard Therodore, Grandmixer DST, Grandmaster Caz, Afrka Islam and Jazzy Jay needed a deck that allowed them to do their tricks and show off their skills. A number of them had used various technics decks in the 70s so when th SL1200/1210 came along, the scene was set.

The rise of the hip hop dj gave the rise of the Technics deck to legendary status.

We live a consumer society. We have loads of stuff we don't need. We pay over the odds for loads of things. People pay their money and they take their choice.

It is very true some decks are better put together than others, better finished than others. This has always been the case. It's the same in many areas of our society.

But has to said that there are some excellent decks from yesteryear still producing the good.
