I've heard that about the Obsidian Plinth too. I have to admit that one of the reasons I like it is because it looks good. I have ordered some RDC cone feet and will give them a go under the TT when they arrive.

I'm getting a graphite mat too just to see what difference that makes:

    http://www.boston-audio.com/mat1.html

Richard at Vantage told me that the Micro Seiki gunmetal mats are particularly good for the SP10 as well. But they do cost a fortune.

I've got a Garrard 401 to plinth too, eventually. I'll make my own and I've also been thinking that a monumental mason is the best place to start for reasonably priced granite / marble / slate. The Slate deck designs look nice but they are dead simple and cost a lot too. I just can't afford that at the moment.

    Bottleneck:

If you are after an SP10, check out:

    http://www.hifido.co.jp/

    or ebay.aus

Mine was pretty cheap, as I said it didn't look great but it worked perfectly.

Ooh, I am very tempted by the graphite mat you are getting. Please post (or pm me) your findings - many thanks.

    I will do.

They're making a run of 293mm ones next and that's the size I need for the SP10 so It might be a while but it is 'on order'.

I'm just about to mount the EMT too. I'll let you know about that as well.

Frankland reviewed the Nak in Popular Hi-Fi (I think) and said it was pants and inferior to a Planar.

No tune - but then it wasn't a Linn.

I might have the review somewhere which might keep some entertained.

Ah but how could anything compare with the might of Rega an Linn back in the day Rob?

Was Popular Hifi the one that recommended spending all your budget on an LP12/Ittok and fitting a nail connected to plastic cups by string until you could afford better components downstream?

    Yes that's the one.

I think 'source 1st' (in terms of quality and spend) was generally good advice back then, before CD and digital sources so long as it wasn't taken to silly extremes. Of course there were many more good sources around at the time than some of the press and dealers would admit.

    Things are very different today.

I tend to agree, although I seem to recall thinking the difference between say an LP12/Basik and a well setup P3 or AR EB101 was not that huge - it was when you got to Ittok levels that the gulf appeared. Heresy of course!

Funnily enough I'm currently slumming it on the phono front, and have a real mullet of a vinyl setup. I can't imagine it being this entertaining with the roles reversed though.

Yes - just no plinth, arm, phono stage.... so I'm feeding everything through Richer Sounds finest.

If that happens to be a Cambridge 640P you'll discover, when the SP10 is up and running that it is very, very good indeed :)

I would stick to it being very, very good indeed for £60. Shockingly good for £60.

This "source first" philosophy came from Linn and I like many others was suckered in. Around 1981 I replaced a rega 3 with a Lp12 /Ittock. Retrospectively I think I could have spent my £621 on a second hand pair of Quad ELS57's and a new Amplifier to much better effect.

What did you use with the LP12/Ittok if I might ask?

I like the way this creative Japanese individual has played on the SP10s often ratty and battered condition by using similar styling for the plinth.
