OK this is a very random thread but I know there is a few people from Greater Manchester here.

I travel through Moss Side nearly every day and to be honest I can't see what the fuss is about. People go on thats the roughest part of Britian but Gainsbrough is probably rougher!

If Moss Side was so bad then why are people paying £100k for houses there? Its near the better parts of South Manchester and also near the city centre.

The same goes for Salford having studied there for the last 1.5 years I have not once come across a problem with scallies there. The real rough parts of Manchester never seemed to get mentioned suchas Beswick etc.

It just annoys me when areas such as Moss Side and Salford get a lot of bad media coverage people excaduate the truth. Yes some parts of Moss Side are rough it is a rough area but its not that bad, the same goes for Salford, I wouldn't like to live in the a lot of places in Salford however its not as bad as people make out.

I think the average is about £130k now, its about £200k where I live and thats well above the UK average. (That is property prices though not house prices)

Its mainly London thats expensive. In the worst parts of Manchester you can buy houses for £40k. Also a property is very cheap in a lot of Lancashire mill towns.

Either way if I want to buy a half decent house south Manchester I won't get any change from £200k.

agree with ya A.T,stayed in hulme for a while back in the 80's,some guy was shacked up in the church at the time, the grand junction was our local ,lovely friendly pub didnt have any problems at all and yet a couple of mates staying in whitefield got muged in broad daylight.olny real problem was the little park off oxford road was full of beggars who'd hassle you for change, but once theyd seen you a few times they left you alone

I understand London prices rising the way they have with such desperate shortages in the capital, but it always shocks me when I see it in places far out of london... just cant get used to the idea.

Theres places round mine you can get 3 bedroom houses for £5,000 or less. Not that you'd wanna live there.

There is a place in Newcastle called Benwell, that until fairly recently, a whole street could be bought for £50, and the council would give you £10k per house to do it up. Nobody took up the offer (wonder why ;)), and the estates are in the process of being knocked down.

That sounds like Salford ten years ago, now they are building new flats and luxery homes there. They will still be cheap though because of snobery, unless you have a posh post code land is not worth much, the problem is the posher post codes just get richer, my parents bought their house in an above average part of Manchester but nothing special, now its one of the best parts in the north west in terms of house prices.

As the old saying goes buy the worst house on the best street, not the best house on the worst street.

To summarise these are my views on it,

Moss Side – Has its good and bad areas like anywhere. What you might be missing is history. Your focusing entirely on your views as someone travelling though it now. My Dad has been a courier for around 35 years and used to deliver to the places you see now, well not entirely, as on recent trips though he said the whole place ha totally changed in the last 10 years. Most of it has been flattened, and the people divided up and moved out to Greater Manchester and to the places you mention like Beswick and Gorton. It still does have a reputation because people have long memories and when it was the true Moss Side it deserved it – I know enough people (and the stories they tell, most of which can be independently backed up) who used to have to go into it when we were still in nappies, and all of them aren't liars.

Salford – Anyone who has a go at Salford clearly has never been to the Quays, apartments anywhere on the Quays go for stupid money, and I mean over £250k for a 2 bed. Anything on the Quays is as classy and expensive as what you'll find in the centre – snobs know this, that's why they live there, so snobbery has nothing to do with people not wanting to live there. Again some surrounding areas are fairly bad, but on the whole not as bad as many think.

    Regards

Sounds about right. During the tyneside riots about 10 years ago, there was an area where the main riots happenned called Meadow Well. You would hardly recognise it now, but back then it was a complete hell-hole. Unfortunately, they have done very little to the other estates where the riots happenned.

AT, many of those areas are NOTHING like Salford. Salford, is a bit like Gateshead, a large town, which has goodand bad bits. Many of the places where you can buy cheap houses up here are in deserted mining villages or small suburban areas, and those are even worse in many cases than inner city dives.

Salford Quays has a nice setting though i.e water, areas such as Lower Broughton and Langworthy won't have this. This is why they will be cheap, by cheap I mean like £100k for an appartment, this is cheap considering the same appartment in Didsbury would cost £300k.

Moss Side has bad history I know that, I am old enough to remeber the Hullme cresecents etc but they are all gone now, now its just modern appartments 5 mins walk form the city centre.

The drugs wars between the Moss Side gangs and the Longsight gangs led to such disorder that when I was last working in Longsight police patrolled wearing guns like at the airport. Longsight is not a nice place to be in.

Excellent one :) Of course, you'd still need to win the lottery or stick up a bank to afford a 5% deposit on anything other than a shack in the Outer Hebredes these days...

AT - got a ticket to see Morrissey at the MEMS(?) arena in Manchester in May - any good pubs we should check out if we're in the city centre - we're planning a look around on the morning after the gig.

Also - where's these good 2nd hand record shops you mention - the one that had Unknown Pleasures at the right price etc?? :)

I'm at work so shouldn't really be posting this but...

I was going to go to the Morrisey concert but I don't like heights so decided against it. The MEN arena is huge.

A good pub you may like is called the Gallert on Pricness Street, its more of a preclub (its a pub designed for 5th ave club goers, but it opens like any normal pub, there is no bouncers etc) the music they play is Joy Divsion/Smiths/New Order/Oasis/Beatles etc. Its worh visiitng just to check out the decor, there is designs of LPs all over the wall and celing, one of the ceilings as a huge Love Will Tear Us Apart LP cover design on it.

Other places you may want to check out is Deansgate locks. I tend to mainly just go clubbing in the centre, I drink in my local bars in Chorlton.

That brings me on the next point, the record shop is in the Chorlton, which is 3.5 miles away from the centre, its called Kingbee's.

There is a great site I know that reviews all the records shops inManchester, you may want to check it out, I think Tony L has written some stuff on it too.
