Heads-up for all you Micro$oft haters, Mozilla Firebird 0.7 is now out, it's based on Mozilla 1.5 but it's been on a bit of a diet :)

Get it here, there is code for Windows, MacOS X & Linux.

I take it you use it yourself, how do you rate it against IE?

I wouldn't mind giving it a go, but would imagine MOst sites are coded for IE or Netscape. Have you had any problems? What would you say the advantages/disadvantages are?

    Cheers

    MO :D

    Warning to Mac users.

This borwser has much going for it, but right now its a bunch of cak. If you have the audacity to use the prefrences you can't actually close them again. Most of the add on things don't work and the scroll bars have a tendency to dissapear.

Coupled with the lack of substatiale support for MP, Real and other pluggins, I would say right now the un-skilled like me should leave until version 1.

But as I say much promise, it is lightning quick.

Can some one explain to me why we have this, and mozzila, and Nutscrape, they are all broadly similar.

And have they ditched camino for mac now?

I've used Mozilla Firebird for a while now. I have always tried alternatives to IE in the past (Opera, Netscape etc) and they've all been cack compared to IE, esp. IE6.

Firebird however walks all over IE

Had some trouble downloading v0.7 though - server must have been v. busy.

Bastards! The HTTP link for the download refused to let me in because they couldn't do a reverse DNS lookup on my IP address "for security reasons". That must affect a hell of a lot of people. For a start, I use an ADSL router and a local firewall which doesn't let reverse DNS through. Secondly, my ISP never allocates a DNS name to my IP address (which is the address of the router to the outside world). I imagine there are thousands of people in the same boat.

Went in via FTP though and that was no problem - so they aren't that clever :MILD:

Mine does. This means (for instance) that I can run Internet connected servers behind my firewall. Does yours not do static IP?

I have the option to have static IP (I think it costs extra) but I didn't go for it since I don't need it.

Opera is great for older computers, on my P233 MMX laptop I can run MSN 6.0 and Opera 7.0 and the computer runs so fast (it has 64mb ram). With I.E 5 the entire thing slows down.

With my dekstop (Althlon XP 2000+, 256MB DDR etc) I don't really notice any speed difference.

I main gripe with I.E6 is it is very slow at making DNS requests and decoding the HTML compared to others.

I will give that Firebird a try.

I agree. Downloaded it last week and haven't looked back. Much faster than IE (especially on my laptop - Celeron 400, 65Mb RAM). Firebird in it's last incarnation had a tendency to crash my laptop frequently.

Same here. The only reason I ditched Firebird is because it appeared to have bugs in which got irritating in the end, and also adding the functionality that I wanted to the browser just seemed to slow it down in the end.

I only wish Opera was less buggy, as I think that would be THE browser to use if it was...

Weird - Firebird has yet to crash on me (I started using it with v0.6) wherease IE6 used to crash once in a while.

The tabbed browsing in Firebird is such a nice feature I really miss it when I'm at work (in the office as opposed to working from home) where we have to use IE.

Opera has tabbed browsing aswell but it's not free and I just didn't like the look & feel of Opera at all.

By the way anyone know what's supposed to be new in v0.7? I haven't noticed anything in particular allthough the options page seems like it's improved a bit (don't use it often so can't be sure).

The release notes page on the site is still for v0.6.1

Hmmm, mixed impressions so far. Not crashed, so that's always nice :D and the tab browsing is pretty funky too! However, i'm not convinced about it being faster. Pages seem to load up and text appears faster, but icons, images, and such seem a fraction slower. This is only on first visiting sites on it, so perhaps I just don't notice it on IE as it's got MOst of these saved from previous visits already.

And one small thing, the cursor indicator which is here as I type, needs to be a pixel or two further to the right. Seems to cover the last typed letter slightly.

    Fussy? :D

You may wish to add the Adblock extention, it does exactly what it says on the box and it is easy to adjust and make it block exactly what you wish.

I thought it had this built in? It's stopped several pop ups already.
