Is just to ask if someone knows the Musical Fidelity SA470. In the web of the brand there is only few information: 350W per channel, Class A(99%), near 100kg, the flagship in older times...
I'm asking if somebody have touched and heard it? It was really a flagship? How was inside? How sounded? or any other information

    Thanks

Big bugger. Came out around 1990 if I remember correctly and ran in class A. It was hailed as being the UK's answer to the popular Krells of the day at a time when low efficiency speakers were in vogue. The sound was both dynamic and warm with bone crunching bass. Likely to sound a little different now as many of the components will have aged in the 16 or so years. It would be interesting to hear how it stacked up today.

When Noel Keywood reviewed the amp in the early 90s it took four stocky blokes to get the beast into his flat.

Was it a Td'P circuit like the other MF kit of the time?

There was a monobloc version too called the a570.

Apparently, its the same circuit as the a370, which is the same as the 270, which is the same as..... with just more output transistors.

It has choke supplies, but the problem with chokes in power supplies is that they electrically ring with capacitors, and big capacitors as used in these amplifiers make it much much worse. It takes exhaustive calculation, measurement and testing, and at that time, Musical Fidelity didn't do that, and still don't, as they are still using chokes and huge huge capacitors.

There is a schematic on the internet somewhere for the a370.

Don't forget now that the old MOSFET devices these amplifiers use are now virtually unobtanium, so if it blows up....

Also, don't forget that only a few watt amplifiers can sound truly magical.
