lads, My ATC 20s have been banned... been told outright I'm not allowed them in the living room by 'er indoors - which, if I'm honest, is understandable; they are butt-ugly (they are the old ones).

So what else is there in a similar ball park worth looking/listening at/to?

The initial brief was for active speakers, but this has now been extended to include small footprint drivers, so towers/floorstanders seem to be order of the day.

    All help extremely greatfully recieved:D

I believe WM is our resident expert on speakers with a feminine side.

I'd look at Proac Response 1sc or the recently reintroduced Studio 100's but that's just me, and I'm a bloke.

i hope you are angling for a BIG quid pro quo on this one.
why not try some atc active 70's :D or if they are out of the question as i suspect they will be maybe some of those b&o dalek things... or perhaps some meridian actives...
    cheers

Hey, we have a deal, I can spend the cash, so long as she thinks it looks nice... a pretty fair deal IMO ;)

I can't believe that all good looking transducers are cr.p.. I could of course always rework the ATC enclosures out of mahogany, but I don;t really like to :(

i was actually serious about the last two - and the metal atc's look the business to imho - not sure i'd like how they sound though personally.
what about some pmc / bryston jobbies or the atc 35? can that be active?
the problem is that 'good looking' is even more subjective than 'good sounding' get a bunch of the latest hi-fi mags and have a look through for something that you can both live with. how about some sonus flabbers?
    cheers

Well, I have been looking at the PMCs, they would be fine, the GB1s were the ones that I think I could get away with. I was planing on using the Bryston Preamp/dac BP25da, along with either Bryston amps, or having ATC add the monoblocks to the 20s, so the PMC/Bryston combi is a logical progression.

What I'm hoping to achieve by this thread is just to shortlist the currently extremely long list ;)

The 35s are only available as passive units, although there is no reason why one could put the Bryston power packs on them :)

Really? I think they look rather nice! BTW, do they come with grilles?

Much like bricks then Paul, only these do actually sound rather good (unlike Briks) with or without 3 amps and 15 levels of angle iron.
Still as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder :)

If they spent as much money on the drive units and crossovers as they do on the decidedly camp cabinetry, they might even sound decent :D

I'll pass on the bikinis and stingers and stick with large magets and sophisticated voice coils thanks.

Merlin, I appreicate the vote of confidence sir, a true gent always, camp cabinets eh?, thats a new one, have you been raiding Merlin's magic book of put downs, general sarky retorts & horned one abuse, I rate it 7/10 for originality. I'm genuinely impressed, so havea quick flick throught your spellbook for references to briks

The new Rega floorstanders (there's 3 or so in the range, different sizes) sound pretty good to me, and look domestically acceptable. But Foidwangle's 3rd Law of Speakery does generally hold true: good-looking speaker = pants.

    Oooo, now that's a fiesty remark :D

Be very interested to know in which areas you think the ATCs are lacking... personally I haven;t heard much that can beat them in a siilar price range..

Oh, and saying if something is blue it's good, doesn;t mean if it's not blue, it's sh.t :D

Can of worms time, I've owned the 50's which left me stone cold, very accurate studio monitors for sure (if lacking a little lower down the registars) for music I'm afraid they don't cut for me, I like a little more meat & potatoes than Calistar Flockheart.
I can even tell you about a gent who has 5 atc 150's, who needed the subs to help the bottom end, and still reckons they have no thwack, seriously true!!!!

Hey, no issues there with me, I am a fan of their midrange, I think it's extremely true to form.... but I could pick plenty of holes... however, I'm an HLCD man and I like midbass that can break a rib - not truly accurate, but much more fun :)

Bit of a contridition there Matt, we've been told by most ATC owners they have the most accurate mids in the Biz bar none, I wouldn't say thwack was the forte', more an 'as it is reproduction'
Still try some totems or the PMC's these will give you some thing to chew over :)

Sorry, to clarify, I think the ATC mid is very nice, but the low mid / midbass (say 80-200hz), is too smooth for my liking. It's certainly linear, but I prefer something a little more unrefined :)
