Just been listening to my iPod all day and am currently letting Cannonball Adderley's "Somethin' Else" finish before I leave the office (I leave my iPod in the office usually when I'm in London  ) and the sound it makes (with 320Kbps MP3) through my Sony EX70 "earplug" headphones is pretty bloody stunning

Kind of puts multi-thousand pound hifi systems (of which I have one at home in Portugal) into perspective a little...

Easily the best portable audio I've ever heard, beating my MD portable and even portable CD players I've had hands down, and something that I would call "hifi" sound and not just "acceptable for a portable" type sound

i wonder what some of the small speaker sets are like.
the only reason i would get a portable is for music while camping, and i dont think i would be popular sitting in the tent with headphones on ;)

    Michael,

as I mentioned elsewhere, I've been thinking along similar lines. Given the massive user base for personal audio, it does surprise me that no specialist has had a go at the market, you know with better analogue output stage, better clocks and PSU's.

I look forward to the day when every self respecting youngster can enjoy the Naim CDP1 with optional BaseballCap PSU;)

One thing on the ipod, its best at home with compression. That is to say it will stick a certain amount of data into a buffer, if there is little compression it will be accessing the harddrive practically all the time.

But yes they are utterly gorgeous, and comes in very handing as a big fat storage device as well as player, all you need with it is a Mac ;)

Fox, I am moving into drill and bass territory as well as harder drum and bass such as metlhedz and Ed Rush and Optical, all good stuff of course.

I wish Big BUd would do some more stuff but it don't seem very likely, a bit like Deadly Avenger, won't these groups get their arses into gear, don't they know the public is waiting?

Can't be any worse than the chanting and blood rites (sheeps blood I thinK) rituals, a colleague & myself whitnessed a few years back, not far from the Breacon beacons, when we reposessed (get this a 6 foot silver plated engroved cross, the only thing they had of value) from some 'interesting folk' preforming 'odd acts of sexual gratification with members of the animal kingdom', on a very chilly hill side in mid wales at 3 in the morning, still takes all sorts

That surprises me as I thought the better personal CD players would beat it no problem. Maybe personal CD players just aren't up to much compared with regular "hifi" CD players.

I'm assuming a regular CD player would comfortably see off an ipod - at least that's what Stereophile reckon:

"The compressed formats began to show some real promise at 320kbps. Definition, detail, and soundstaging were all impressive, and high-frequency response was almost liquid in its lack of edge effects. At this rate, differences between the two formats jumped into sharper focus: MP3 made transients "splashy," while AAC just sounded anemic compared to the original. With both formats, dynamic variation was considerably reduced compared to the CD."

Here's the link to the full review if anyone's interested: http://www.stereophile.com//digitalsourcereviews/934/index.html

Makes me wonder what they did to make them sound so poor  Although I kinda agree with the "splashy" MP3, because that is a well known artifact, but that other format (which I havent used) must be even worse if it sounds anemic.

Why dont these companies use a decent format, like MPC
