My sub is making strange noises  From the moment it is switched on, it is making noises as if someone were dragging their fingernails across the cone - even without any input connection. Something electronic has clearly malfunctioned. Fortunately it's guaranteed for 3 years and is less than 2 years old.

    Bah!

Oh well, it has been wrestled back into its box and is in the boot of the car. It will be winging its way towards REL via my friendly local hifi shop this afternoon :Lplates:

And I can pick up my new equipment stand while I'm up there :)

Sounds like a voice coil scraping. Sometimes the suspension sags, or is damaged. Or the vc overheats and blisters. I've seen plastic cones [not like yours] soften, and the coil de-centre.
    Pah! overpriced/overrated Volt drivers...

I've seen a spendor S8 drive unit welded absolutely solid. And a few Vifas made scrapy like chris's REL. This was amid things like DC offsets and all sorts of nasty stuff though...

For it to do it under no signal conditions it points toward circuitry malfunction. If the driver isnt moving it cant scrape so it may just be a bad componant or even a dry joint giving a bad earth somewhere, fingers crossed for ya chris.

It happens with no signal. It isn't the drive unit because the drive unit should not be moving with no signal. Anyway, it's gone back to the dealers so I'll await the diagnosis.

 I want my subwoofer back. The system is not the same without it.
