I need some 4-5 metre speaker cables if Im going to be trying these new horns.

Im interested in some cheap speaker cable (less than 40 quid all in).

Im not interested in dearer cable because I think its a waste of money. If you think different - I dont want to hear it, I just want advice on cheap speaker cable.

Theres some NAC A5 in the classifieds for 20 quid, sounds about right. Its got funny plugs on though.

I presume you can just cut these off?

    Anything else worth a looK?
    ta :)

Chris i have a 5m pair of QED profile 4x4 with bananas (8 on each 16 in total but one has fallen off but i still have it) this would give you 4x5 metre runs there are a couple of nicks on the outer at one end could be shortebned but nothing too serious) I could let you have it for £40 +postage, let me know.

Chris, I've got some QED original kicking around, 2 x 5m approx. runs unterminated. Yours for £15 plus £2-3 for the postage.

As for the NAC A5, what are the plugs on it? You're right though that you could just chop them off and attach your prefered means of termination.

the naim plugs (if they are naim plugs) are effectively 2 bannana plugs joined together so continental types can't jam them into their power sockets. just unscrew the pastic housing and use the metal pins in the same way as you would a bananna plug.
    cheers

    offers galore! yay!

plus I get to sell my Goertz (Isolda equivelant) for around a ton, so I will be quids in. (its 2.5 metres if anyones interested before I put up the add)

Joel - if youre reading whats this cable mate?

Bl21 - sounds interesting, price is right. I will bear that one in mind.

Analogue kid - thanks, something a mite cheaper (and not bi-wired) is probably more on the cards though.

    Cheers again
    Chris

    Chris,

Look over on PFM, there's a thread there about it. Joel is doing a group buy.

I totally recomend the Naim Nac A5, I bought some to replace Chord Co. Odyssey at £17m, far better in my system anyway.

    Chris

Seeing as cables are not an issue for you, why not try 2.5mm^2 mains cable. I used it for ages before getting Isolda. For what it is, it does a fine job. Very cheap per meter from DIY shops.

I used to own/use Naim NAC A5. Ignoring any issues of sound, do be warned that it is an extremely stiff and thick cable.

You can get round this problem by using a hair dryer to make it bend round sharp corners etc.
I think i shall give that mains cable a go, may even try it with the nac A5, Nac for bass, mains for treble?
Penance, is that stranded mains cable or solid core?

    chrisp,

It was the solid core twin & earth i used. Ignore the un-insulated earth and just use the red and black insulated conductors.
I have no experience of naca5, but i would use the mains cable for bass, or try it both ways.

    thanks everyone.

Ive added my name to Joel's waiting list, its cheap as chips and is something new to try. Im sure it will be fine.

Ive ordered some of his interconnect wire at 75p a metre too!

    Thanks for all the offers.

Penance, I bought some mains cable today to give it a try, i already ahd a spare set of banana's so experiment only cost me £3.30!
First up was a direct replacement to the Naim with jumpers in place, the sound was coarse compared to the Naim but the bass was quite good.So next step was to use the naim for treble and mains for bass. This si the first time I have tried bi-wiring my speakers so i was looking forward to this. The smoothness came back but the bass was somewhat detached??? not very 'musical'.I have yet to try the bass and treble round the other way.
I think if I was to upgrade from the naim I would have to try a more expensive copper cable as I didn't get on with silver.
With regards to the mains cable it would be an interesting comparison with something like qed 79 strand.
    Cheers.
