    Bass

From what I've read you are all a bunch of bloody fairies just playing at it.

I use a pair of JBL monitors with 15 inch bass units driven by 2 Rotel power amps monoblocked to give about 500 watts a side. You couldn't power a paper bag off any fucking Naim amp.

As well, I have a REL studio subwoofer for each bass channel, set for where the JBLs cut off. This rig will rock the arse off anything you lot can do with your little boys systems. Sheet is the idea not to frighten the little wifey with a beeg nasty Hi Fi then?

When I play Maiden righteous and loud it's there goes the neighbourhood.

Oh and ATCs start at the 150s and are OK above that. The 100s are for wusses.

Yep, the ATCs would be fab in Hermann's room - no doubt, and it would be an interesting comparison between the ATCs and his Briks. However, I think Hermann would miss the effect of the Brik's upward-firing drivers...an effect that is very seductive in his particular environment.

It's difficult to explain in words the 'analytical' thing I refer to, I do however think it would become obvious to you if you were ever to do a side-by-side comparison between your active ATCs and the passive set-up I suggested.

"Why aren't you posting on the Naim forum? People are murmuring that you were banned."

I shouldn't comment, but let's just say that the mods and I have had a difference of opinion on a few matters regarding the new kit, and my discussions about fuses etc, so I'm on 'holiday' from there at the moment; banned, no. This place is like a breath of fresh air in comparison, and I'm enjoying the freedom of speech ;)

Yes, well the Naim moderators don't enjoy dissenting voices spoiling their advertorial. A glance at the topic titles reveals that the Naimies aren't too happy with their gear.

"I've just bought a so-and-so, what should I upgrade to next?"

    vies with

"I've just bought a so-and-so, when will it start to sound any good?"

    and

"How much better than the wotsit is the new gear, really honestly?"

for the top spot. Plus ca change.

Hey Penance I listen to Zep, Priest, and even Yes sometimes. Doesn't come much more subtle than that.

Zep 3 is one of the most subtle albums of all time. Brilliant playing and no one wankin off on a guitar like some later stuff.

Thing is, most metal bands are pretty brilliant musicians but people play them on little toy systems so it gets lost. You need BIG speakers BIG subwoofers to take the strain. Then it's all kicking and sorted and you can hear it really clear.

Perhaps our resident 'Metalhead' is the charming Mr Channing? ;)

Him and Dev are inseparable these days.

    Bub

Most "Naimees" are more than happy with their gear.

Everyone upgrades in every walk of life, we all drive better cars, wear better suits etc. It is called progress.

In twenty years time, the stuff that we use today will be mere starter level. Our Grandchildren will think we were right pillocks for debating over such low grade rubbish.

    Regards

    Mick

Mick, one poor sap was told by his Naim dealer "no bass for 6 months" due to the protracted burn-in time.

Don't be too sure, Mick. Twenty years ago (1981 to be exact), I bought a Quad 33/303. I still have it and it still sounds jes' fine as the heart of No.2 system. It's not as good as the active Linn system that is my No.1 system, but it makes great music still and I intend to keep it until it blows up - which judging by its current durability is not too likely. OK, perhaps I'm no connosieur of hi-fi (and Bub will shortly emerge on cue to tell me I'm a deaf old git), but I love music and that's the only qualification you need to enjoy hi-fi. I wish you well upgrading, I'm happy with what I've got.

Actually Tones I don't think you are deaf, but I could be wrong, I think you just listen to the music rather than the hi-fi, which is what we all should do, but don't mostly.
