How old is it? Has it been serviced? Do you have the original box/manual?

    Thanks

That is a bargain price, even without box/servicing...

Why do these things always appear just after I've bought a CD5/FC!?!?!

According to Naim the average life of the laser is 10 years so if it hasnt been replaced it will be near the end of its life. Naim charge GBP590 to replace the laser. Do you still think it's a bargain?

£590 to replace a laser? That's a bloody ripoff! The part itself probably costs £20-50 tops and then it's maybe a 2 hour job at most to fit it.

Even if the part cost £100 and Naim charged £100 p/hour labour (which I doubt they do) that would still only be £300 so god only knows where the remaining £300 goes.

The complete Transport mechanism on the Rotel 991 (iaasc's old one) was only £108 direct from rotel, that was the WHOLE transport unit, talk about a touch rich

The laser life depends on use and abuse. This unit has not had much use, and has been care for like no other.
I keep all boxes, but this on had been flood damaged so I bined it.
I will pack well if required.
I based my price on what I thought reasonable, and fair.
It is still for sale, if anyone is still interested.

To the best of my memory, the reason the CDi mech replacement costs so much (and I'm not entirely sure it is that much), is that Naim had a big stockpile of these things, only to discover that in the period between acquiring them and fitting the first replacements many of them had died - it seems they don't like the storage conditions and inactivity. Hence, Naim have far fewer than they originally thought they had, and they have to install them in a player and fire them up about once a year to keep them ticking over. That, and you're absorbing the costs of all the ones that died, the postage both directions (£50?), and the faff of getting into a CDi (anyone tried this? It's not easy, because everything is connected to everything else).

...and on some of the Philips mechs (notably ones from mid 90s Marantz models) there ARE no spares as such, except at component level, so you have to tear down the transport itself to replace the parts. My mate (Henryt's) CD16 died and it was a fair whack to get it running again; didn't help that the laser is always on in that model - even when there's no disc in there.

Laser diodes die with time, whether they're used or not. I'm lucky that my 1985 Technics SL-P2 still works...

GBP590 is the figure Naim themselves gave me. Apparently the price is simply a reflexion of supply&demand. I suppose if the laser is the ONLY thing likely to go wrong on a CDi it is still worth buying one? Any thoughts?

I would say it is worth buying one!!!!
Especially at only £500 when the trade are still asking £750 for them....
