c'mon, everyone knows that naim is utter bollocks with no redeaming features whatsoever. everything they touch immediately becomes crud of the highest order. don't even play one of their cd's in your machine or it will taint the rest of your system with it's naimness and it will never sound right again.

just listen, if you like it it's good, if not then it isn;t.
    cheers

Never heard any Naim ever, so can't comment, and can't see why it can't be as good as everyone else's stuff (bit expensive for my tastes, that's all, but then so are a lot of other makes).

Just a quick for you Ian, how does the CD3.5 compare to the digital turntable? I've never done a 'Double blind' on those :)

    My take, mostly ampwise.

Old chrome bumper stuff - decent, and extremely good VFM second hand. You won't get a better phono stage for the money anywhere, so if vinyl is your main source, something like a 32.5/140 is an excellent buy.

Olive stuff - haven't heard a lot of it, but what I have heard has not particularly impressed for the money. I think you need to get to near the top of the olive range before it gets decent, and that's not cheap, even second hand.

The new stuff - no idea, really. Julian2002's system was very decent when I heard it, and that was mostly the new range. I like the CDX2, but it's very expensive for what you get. I haven't heard the uber-expensive CDS3/552/500.

Naim speakers: no redeeming features whatsoever, IME.

If you like what Naim sounds like, then that's what you like, so you might as well buy it. If you don't like it, don't bother.

    who said anything about a 3.5...its a cd1

haven't done a direct a/b, but I think some of trichords stuff does lean towards the lean and clinical/correct presentation...certainly the pulsar dac is impressive but a little too correct..what do you think tone.?

interestingly, the chrome bumper amps are exactly the same inside as the olive stuff...its a very old rca circuit bastardized by naim..all the naim amps are the same, just a bigger psu...dunno about the later stuff..I suspect they keep that quasi output stage, and as you can't parallel transistors in it to get more power, they have resorted to bridging...I think that is a big part of naims distinctiveness...the output stage topology...

had a pair of sbls once...really coarse and anxious sounding...too much for me, and I don't like laid back...

    All I am saying

is the Naim will be up there with legions of fans when you lot are pushing up daisies.

Tone, .....if I speak nicely to Paul Darwin, I am sure we can build a one off very large Naim case to bury you in, how about next week.

    Regards

    Mick

    Re: All I am saying

So will Justin Timberlake but that doesn't make him any more appealing or talented now does it.

Ah Julian, you underestimate the powerful marketing team behind old Dustbin.

Almost as good as the Salisbury Salesmen ( or der SS as they are known in more rounded parts)
