Can someone explain to me the importance of Naim serial nos ?

Whenever I see Naim gear advertised secondhand, the seller always makes a point of giving the serial number. Why is it so much more important than that of, say, Cyrus or Meridian gear ?

naim keeps a history of each piece of equipment it makes. if you have the serial number you can tell it's age from their web page and if you e-mail them they can tell you if it's been serviced or upgraded i.e. the old cdps could be upgraded to xps status or the old nait 3 could be split into seperate pre and power sections to allow it to act as a pre amp only, etc.
not sure if meridien or cyrus do this.
    cheers
