hi people, im looking to get a new pair of speakers for my system, and am considering either kef Q1 or Epos M5 preferably secondhand. My system constits of Arcam CD72 cdp, NAD C352 amp, Wharfedale EVO10 speakers, atlas equator interconnects and kimber 8pr speaker cable. The sound is pretty uninspiring with the evo 10's, plenty of bass but slow and wooly, and the midrange and treble sound quite dull. mainly listen to dance, pop also some ambient chillout music so looking for something that will sound good with a variety of music styles, any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Actualy you have just described the cdp ! Though not wholly bad, and with a little help can sound faster and less ho hum.

As to speaker there is not budget but why not get a listen to the little Quad 11L[?]. They were certainly one of the best small speakers I'd be happy to live with.

there's nothing wrong with the cdp

you could do much worse than pick up a s/h pair of b and w cm2's. should be around 250 ukp and are a greatly underrated speaker. nicely built too

I would say you're thinking along the right lines with the Epos M5's. Their strengths lie exactly in the weak areas of your system described above.

Could you stretch your budget to get a pair of Monitor Audio GR10's? They really are good, and match well with Arcams smooth high end!

Funny you say that 'cos I was thinking along the same lines about the amp. When I still had my Arcam Alpha 9 and Mission 773e's, I tried a NAD C370. I fell asleep listening to it. It was the very definition of dull and lifeless. Is the C352 any better? The Alpha 8R slaughtered the C370, but then it should, it cost more :D

The CD72 is one of the better £400 players but it is no giant slayer. The GR10 will likely be much too revealing of its shortcomings along with those of the NAD.

Hard to know which to tackle first here. If it were me I would go out and buy a complete system starting with an £800+ CD player. Failing that, I think possibly the amp would be the biggest upgrade here.

If you're thinking of the kef and nad combo - get a demo first...

while the sound isn't bad, I'm sure there are better combos out there...

Epos all the way. Great speakers for the cash.
