    Hi all,

I am looking to upgrade my amp, I currently own a marantz CD4000, Denon PMa 350SE and my recent purchase Quad 21L speakers. As you can see I would like to upgrade my amp/Cd player to match my new speakers. I have about £250-350 to play with for a new amp and l am looking at picking up something Ex-Dem-S/H. The Audiolab 8000S seems a good option. Did see a Audio Analogue Primo Settanta in that price range but have never listened to one and there is little in the way of reviews. Any other suggestions, comments?

    Cheers
    Eric

Just got a Cyrus 3 again after many years apart. Very very good amp, and you can pick them up for around £160 now off eBay. Get the 3, not 3i or onwards, they are not as good.

the audiolab is a solid and very flexible buy,the pre stage is better than the power stage so adding extra power amps is worthwhile.

they also respond remarkably well to power cable upgrades for some reason, more so than any other amp i've tried.

Yeah 8000S is a safe bet. Or a Rega Mira integrated.

I am very fond of my Monarchy Audio SM70 Pros. Trouble is they sound so good you'll end up buying two!

Cheers for the advice guys, still looking around to see if I can pick up something SH/Ex-dem. 8000s is going for around £200 on ebay, looks like I could pick up the Rega Mira for £200-300 on ebay as well.

My mate has had a Cyrus 3 from new, and it is an awesome amp. Great 2nd hand buy IMO. Interesting to read that the 3i is not as good - I always thought the 3i was the same but with the odd extra feature??

Yeah I think the Cyrus looks far better than the boring Audidrab rectangle boxes!

The 3i is a completely different amp inside by a different designer.

Though well built the 8000s is not a forgiving power amp ....if you system is at all forward the 8000s can make it excruciatingly bright.

I had one a year or so ago to get rid of ....my tamps of the time showed it a clean pair of heels in all but power output.
